Many of the rivers especially in the Lower Peninsula are running a bit high and muddy due to recent rain and snowmelt. The inland lakes still have ice however deep snow and slush is making travel a bit difficult on some. Constant changes in the weather continue to provide good fishing one day and shut it down the next.

Southeast Lower Peninsula
Lake Erie - Anglers need to be careful on the ice and watch the edges. The waters of Brest Bay are cloudy because of work being done at the Fermi Power Plant. Some bluegills and perch were caught around the Metro Park Marina when using white jigs with wax worms.
Huron River - Has high water levels which improved the steelhead fishing. Try up near the Flat Rock Dam. A few panfish were taken along the backwaters.
Detroit River - Water levels are up here as well. Those perch fishing in Airport Bay reported 40 to 50 fish per trip, with about 30 keepers. Good perch fishing up around Belanger Park, which is up near the River Rouge.
Lake St. Clair - Ice conditions are variable with weak ice or open water in the areas where there is a current. Caution needs to be used where there are creeks and or drains because of recent rain and all the runoff. Perch fishing has been spotty. Fishing will most likely be slow for a few days until the water clears back up.
Saginaw Bay - Near Pine River and Palmer Roads, anglers can not get out as far as they would like to as the ice blew out. Closer to shore they're getting a few small perch. The best walleye catches have come in 14 to 21 feet of water off Linwood and in 15 to 20 feet of water off the Bay City State Park. Large ice shoves are reported from Erickson Road to Pinconning, and anglers can not get past them. There has been fair to good pike spearing at Vanderbilt Park near Quanicassee and also over the weedbeds between the Mud Creek access site and Sand Point.
Saginaw River - They're getting some walleyes and perch in the lower river around the Independence Bridge, and up near Veterans' Park and the Zilwaukee Bridge. Not doing quite as well in downtown Saginaw. Anglers are reminded to watch ice conditions closely following the rains we had on Sunday. Increased runoff could degrade the thickness of the ice.
Sebewaing River - A few perch were caught in the river and around the marina but anglers will still have to do some sorting.
Pigeon River - A few perch and the odd lake trout were taken in the river and the adjoining marina basins.
Southwest Lower Peninsula
St. Joe River - Is currently under a flood warning. Best guess is the river will not come back down until sometime this weekend.
Kalamazoo River - Water levels are up, so look for steelhead up near the Allegan Dam. Try drifting spawn or wax worms under a bobber.
Grand River at Lansing - Pike and walleye are being caught. Look for open waters along the river and fish with minnows.
Lake Lansing - Still has ice and ice fishing. Try tip-ups with large minnows for pike and small white or glow teardrops with wax worms for bluegill.
Lake Ovid - Has ice, but angler activity has been low.
Muskegon Lake - Anglers will want to avoid the area near the channel going out into Lake Michigan due to thin ice leading to open water. Perch are being caught near the bottom in 35 to 45 feet of water on the west end of the lake however anglers will need to sort out the small ones. Try a variety of baits including minnows, wax worms, spikes, cut bait and fish eyes. Some pike were caught on the east half of the lake when using tip-ups with golden shiners.
White Lake - Anglers are catching perch. Try fishing the deeper waters off Indian Point and Long Point. Remember to use caution when fishing near the channel that leads to Lake Michigan. Look for bluegill and crappie off White Lake Drive.
Northeast Lower Peninsula
Grand Lake - Walleye and perch fishing has been spotty.
Long Lake - Perch and walleye are being caught but the bite has been slow.
Thunder Bay River - Ice on the river survived the warm temperatures and the rain. A few people have been out but no reports have come in. There should be a mix of walleye, whitefish, and some steelhead for the taking.
Cooke Dam Pond - Bluegills were caught during the last warm-up. Pike are hitting on tip-ups with large minnows.
Hubbard Lake - Walleye fishing was a bit slower as the fish seem scattered. Perch action was on one day and off the next. The jumbos were hitting on tip-ups.
Van Etten Lake - Perch are still hitting but catches were spotty. Try a variety of baits including wax worms, spikes, wigglers, minnows, or cut bait.
Tawas Bay - Perch fishing remains slow with mostly small fish taken in 15 to 20 feet of water. Walleye fishing was also slow but a few whitefish were taken. Pike spearing was fair.
Higgins Lake - Still has ice and about 4 inches of new snow. Lake trout are still hitting in 80 to 100 feet of water. Whitefish are just off the bottom in 80 to 100 feet of water. Rainbow trout are hitting on wigglers in shallow waters. One angler managed to catch a rainbow weighing in at nine pounds. Smelt have been caught up near the North State Park when fishing at night. Perch fishing was fair to good.
Houghton Lake - Pike fishing remains good, with tip-ups working best. For walleye, fish the Middle Grounds, along the north shore or along the east side of the lake. Many are hoping the panfish bite will start improving by the end of month.
Northwest Lower Peninsula
Traverse City - Those able to get out and fish the bays are finding whitefish. The better spots to fish were off Yuba in the East Bay or around the nets in the West Bay.
Crystal Lake - Whitefish were still being caught in 45 to 65 feet of water straight out from Beulah. Perch were taken in 20 to 50 feet of water on the east side of the lake.
Portage Lake - Has been good for perch.
Manistee River - Look for steelhead up near Tippy Dam. Try back trolling with plugs or floating spawn under a bobber.
Lake Cadillac - Is still very good for pike and the catch rates for panfish were fair. With last ice not too far away, crappie fishing should pick up soon.
Lake Mitchell - Pike fishing has been very good when using tip-ups.
Upper Hamlin Lake - Snow and slush is making for difficult travel across the ice. Those that can get out are catching crappie on minnows. Bluegills are hitting on green glow teardrops with wax worms.
Hackert Lake - Near Scottville is producing some crappie.
Pere Marquette Lake - Perch are hitting on minnows and wigglers. A few pike were taken on tip-ups.
Upper Peninsula
Portage Lake - Still has ice but there are some areas with slush and snow drifts. Torch Bay has large areas with slush. Fishing is still slow with only a few pike taken on tip-ups with minnows in Chassell Bay. Walleye fishing has been spotty except for a few fish taken at the Humps when jigging a Swedish Pimple with minnows.
Keweenaw Bay - Has good lake trout action in 80 to 110 feet of water on the Center Reef. Try out from Jentoff's dock in 230 to 250 feet of water or out from the Old Mission on US-41 in 220 to 280 feet of water. Ice thickness varies depending on where you are so extreme caution needs to be used. The coho and lake herring bite has been slow. A few smelt were taken at night between Baraga and L'Anse or between the Baraga Marina and Sand Point. Whitefish were taken east of Baraga in 80 to 105 feet of water.
Little Bay De Noc - Heavy snow is once again causing travel problems for some motorized vehicles. Anglers are marking good numbers of fish however cold temperatures have them dormant. Those out fishing report favorable ice north of Sand Point. Walleye anglers reported mixed results as some did well while others were struggling. The better fishing continues to be near the Center Reef when using tip-ups 2 to 3 feet off the bottom in 30 to 40 feet of water. Evenings are best. Fair results off the Terrace Inn in Gladstone when jigging or using tip-ups in 35 to 40 feet of water, in the shallow waters near the Day's River and up near Garth Point. Steady whitefish action in 65 to 70 feet of water off Sand Point. Perch were caught on wigglers in 11 to 17 feet of water near Kipling and in 25 feet of water near the Escanaba River.
Munising - A few nice lake whitefish along with lots of smaller ones have been caught in 60 to 75 feet of water when jigging mainly spawn, minnows or wax worms. Those going out near Murray Bay were getting fish but extreme caution needs to be used due to open water out there. Splake action was fair. Some were lucky enough to get smelt when using a glow jig with a wax worm while fishing the entire water column in 50 to 60 feet of water. Burbot were taken on spawn in 60 feet of water. The number of herring being speared has gone down. Most anglers reported only one school going through in a two hour period in the early morning.
Big Manistique Lake - Walleye fishing picked up. While most fish were taken on tip-ups, jigging with large minnows was also productive.
Munuscong Bay - Is producing good catches of walleye while jigging with minnows in 3 to 10 feet of water. An occasional northern pike or perch were also caught.
Cedarville and Hessel - Anglers fishing Musky Bay are catching yellow perch and the occasional northern pike while jigging with wax worms and wigglers in 10 to 13 feet of water. The fish are scattered throughout the bay. Those fishing in the Moscoe Channel are catching the bigger perch but not as many. Fish in the 11 to 14 inch range were caught.
Brevoort Lake - Anglers are still taking some nice catches of walleye and perch.
