BASS are biting after the recent storms.
Fish weighing up to 8lb have been coming out to squid, worm and fish baits after the Hampshire coast has taken a battering.
A good southerly blow churns up the food along the shoreline and a 10-yard cast can sometimes be too far.
Hilsea angler John O'Brien has had a lot of success from Eastney fishing less than five yards out with big squid or mackerel baits.
But his advice is to keep your lights off of the water and set your tackle up well back from the water line and be ready for a fish from the first cast.
The flounder fishing has been slow around the Portsmouth area and Southampton venues Hythe and Weston should produce more flatties with ragworm the top bait.
There are still a few codling to be caught<br />
with lug and squid top baits and a good cast into an onshore wind from Hayling, Eastney, Browndown and Lee on Solent gives you the best chance of a late fish.
Rockling, pout and small whiting are still being caught and there is a chance of a few flounders from Hayling at night throughout February.
If the water temperatures remain higher than usual expect the dull months of February and March to be replaced with some early sport from gars and bass and hopefully some plaice in-between.
John Richardson Jnr bagged the biggest flounders to net victory in Gosport and District Angling Club's January beach championships at Warsash.
The top four finishers all landed two flounders but Richardson's specimens tipped the balance in his favour.
He claimed the prize for heaviest bag and heaviest fish pool with a flounder weighing 970g.
