Strawberry 03/02

Got fishing at around 10am. Had a few bites within the first 20 minutes, then caught 4 cutts within about 2 hours, nothing huge, mostly small (only 2 of us out of four caught a total of 4). There was a big pack of snow/slush/ice mix. The guys had the hand auger all the way down to the handle trying to get through all the layers. Probably about 16-18 inches of ice.We went over by the island far far east of the marina. I'm not sure where it's even by, but it was quite slow. Wind was quite bad, and it didn't help with the cloud cover. It was pretty chilly. We were using tube jigs, mealies and worms. Then we went snowmobiling and I got stuck to the point where the whole back end of it was in about 2 feet of snow. Sat for an hour trying to dig it out, but my husband finally went and got someone from the store. []

Welcome to the forum Megan- sounds like a fun trip despite being stuck. With that much ice I would imagine a power auger would be recomended for anyone going up-

I personally have put away the ice stuff and cant with for some open water- so good luck to anyone still hitting the ice-

We found out after we were done for the day that Strawberry rents out power augers for $25.00 a day. I wish we had known long before we attempted the hand auger!

I'm also ready for some open water. We drove past Echo on the way home, and it was looking pretty bad. You can see from the freeway that the edges are way soft. Looks like with a few more weeks of warmer weather, we should be able to fish that before too long.

Glad that you were able to at least catch a few. Sounds like an adventure on getting stuck. You may want to add some chub minnows to your bait options next time you fish Strawberry. I caught most of my fish on Saturday using small pieces of chubs for tipping my jigs.
