... there is a good chance I will be taking one fly line off of an old reel and using that reel with a different line..
.. the fly line that I want to take off of that reel is still in good shape so I dont want to just toss it into the trash can. My question is how do I store the old line for a long period of time and still keep it in good condition?

[cool][font "Pristina"][green][size 4] Hi there MacFly - I would be inclined to store the line on the plastic spool that came with the line when you purchased it. Less likely for it to memorize a tight wind. So much for that, but to tell you the truth I have an old line that I purchased for my first rod. It has to be around 20 years old & has been stored on my first fly reel. I use this rod & reel for practicing in my back yard. No problem with coiling. I'm sure someone else will have a more efficient way to store your line. BTW I will occasional lay the entire line out and stretch it for a while just to play safe. [/size][/green][/font]

DR.. as a matter of fact the line in question is the line that came with my shakespeare combo.. soon, I may be in a position where I can use that reel for other purposes.. if that is the case Id like to save this line and store it..
.. hind site being 20/20... I now wish I had saved one of the spools I got with other lines that I bought later for my sage rod...
... thanks for the info and the tip about laying the line out so it can stretch out.. is that something that should be done routinely.. like every six months???

First off, you know me, I don't save old line.....I would have way too much hanging around and usually if I replace line it is an UP grade so I don't need the old stuff. If it is a good line, but I just want to try something different , then I give the old line to either Poky or some other friend that is into the sport but can't afford to stay on top. NO MAC I don't have any line at the moment LOL, The line I have been buying lately is to put on new reels I have just bought.
Now as far as this line you want to save. Make sure it is clean, a good line dressing (GLIDE for one). Find a book about 5" or 6" wide (thin book will work) Wrap the line around the book WIDTH loose enough you can slide it off. Make sure to tag it somehow with leader end and backing end, this is a must with Weight Forward Line, Double taper won't mater. This way you will know after a long period of time, which end to put on reel first.
Once you got it all in a loop, use some pipe cleaners or bread wire wrappers. Two should work. Put it in a paper towel and put it in a plastic bag. Store someplace cool.

...sis.. I dont beg that much do I..lol.. or do I??
anyway.. we are assuming that I put that line on that reel right in the first place.. lol..
.. on a serious note now.. thanks for the directions.. I had assumed I would have to clean it well first.. just was not sure how to do the storing. what you described should be simple and straight forward enough for me to accomplish.. [ ]

I have received line this way before and I throw away the spools also, so it is a great way to store them. I had some DT I took off a reel and I was going to get the Ridgeline to put on it, but, then I bought another reel and spool so I am good, but I was thinking of letting you try the DT. Only problem is it was a 4wt.

[font "Pristina"][green][size 4] [cool]There isn't any set rule for how often one stretches their line. I try to do it a couple of times a year. So yea about every 6 mos if my math is correct.[/size][/green][/font]

Any thoughts on a proper way to stretch the line. Is running through leather flaps applying pressure with the fingers enough?
Thanks for the input.

[font "Pristina"][green][size 4][cool]Hi there EPCJMC and welcome to the BFT & Fly Fishing boards. I think that leather maybe a bit course. I like to attach one end of my line to a swivel which is attached to a fix point. Then when I stretch it any coils will unravel. Hanging it out the window with a weight attached will accomplish the same thing. However, you would have to be several stories high to stretch 90’ of line. Cleaning of the line is simple as lying in a sink of warm water & a bit of dove cleaner. Dry it by running it through a soft cloth. Hey it works for me – but then I don’t fish every day or unfortunately every week. BTW where do you fish and what is your target game?[/size][/green][/font]

I only stretch mine when I am using it (if it needs it, in the summer it doesn't)
And when I do stretch I don't stretch the whole line. I just wait for a big fish to do that for me[laugh]
A good way is to put a rag over the ball receiver on you vehicle (if you have one) and grab the tip of your line with one hand and rod and reel with the other. Loop the line over the receiver and walk backwards. You don't need a lot of strength, you can break the outer cover.
EPCJMC, I am not crazy about those leather patches. You can't tell how much pressure you are applying, and I have seen people melt their line with those things.

Thanks for the info about stretching. I am pretty new to the site and been lurking for a couple of months. I live/fish in Wisconsin, mainly trout, bass, and occasionally nothern pike and walley.
I found the site when I got a new Super Fat Cat Float Tube from Santa. Santa also got me a trolling motor that I am trying to come up with a way to attach to the float tube. It is amazing that Santa always comes through when you make a list! I have purchased a BW Sports Float Power, but am trying to find a way to incorporate the both on to the tube - worried about the weight/location of the battery. I have some ideas I want to try, but I am still iced over, I have spring fever so bad I am ready to dut a 4' square hole in a lake!
I have been tubing for about six years, and Fly Fishing since I was a kid, but I have a very bad knee. This limits the time wading in the streams, which in turn limits the trout fishing. We do have several lakes/ponds near home - I just can not seem to give it up - and frankly, I refuse. I am only 41 years old - way too young to hang up anything. Wife always seems to remind me - as does my friend "arthur" - as in arthritis. I just grin an bear it - along with a few expletivies. Way too many years of hockey groing up.
Motto is work hard, play harder!
I will be able to give some updates, photos and pics of my tricking out of the tube once I get it wet. Stillwork in progress in the basement. Also plan on showing some of you guys some motivation to make a trip to Wisconsin for some good fishin' and a good whiff of our dairy air. LOL.
- Eric
PS - the EPCJMC is my wife and I's initials. I need to come up with a cool handle - like Dryrod, Tubebabe, Macfly, Tubedude, TubN2, etc etc (list is not all inclusive).
I am 5'5" weigh 230 lbs. Thinking of Mightymite - what say you?

...I give a big thumbs up on the mightymite.. sounds like a name that will stand out...[ ]
since you were kid enough to give us a reason you like that name I will fill you in on mine.. I am of Irish decent (a Mac).. and I like the fly fishing... plus.. the family name in the back to the future movies was McFly... and I really liked those corny movies..
.. the original site I started going to for advice already had a McFly.. so I came up withe MacFly55 (55 is the year I was born).. I had the good fortune of meeting and good sense to listen to fg on that site.. she told me about this one.. and I have been here ever since..
..on a different note I have had the good fortune of meeting a couple of the guys from this site and fished with them.. tn2, dr, and bendopolo...all great guys who have kind of taken this newbie under their wing and watch over me to make sure I dont mess up to bad when I am on the water..

Good fishing line should not just be put away. If it stays dry for too long then it goes bad. It is better to keep it wet by using it every day.[cool]
Go fishing more often, complain less often and drink more fresh beer very often.

I know you are right on the fish more often.. I do when I can.. but not as often as I want..
... since when do I complain.. ??? [sly]
... as for the beer.. thats reserved for when we meet up to wet a line as well as a whistle.. [sly]

[font "Pristina"][green][size 4][cool]Hey there TN2 - how about soaking the line in beer? That is what we all do to prevent us from going dry. LOL[/size][/green][/font]

[font "Pristina"][green][size 4][cool]Hey there Mightmite aka EPCJMC - thanks for the update. Don't let a bum knee keep you out of the water. I messed up mine so bad that it kept me out of Korea. Yup I'm older than dirt. That said - my favorite form of fly fishing is wading then comes tubing. Likewise I have a Super Fat Cat. I usually take 3 Aleves before venturing out and that gets me though the day. BTW should we have a contest in picking you a new handle?[/size][/green][/font]

That is cool how you have yours and your wife's initials for your screen name.
I come from a Tubing Family. I'm sure you guessed who my Mom and Dad are. The full family lineup is like this:
TubeDude = my Dad
TubeBabe = my Mom
TubeN2 = me
TubeNtoo = my son
(Reserved) one more spot for my Grand Son.[cool]

sooooooooooo welcome to the family MightyMite (if that is the one you choose)
MacFly [cool]
I corrected the original post of saying my grand daughter was MacBaby to the correct name of MacNugget.. beleive me.. if Mrs MacLarry had seen that I would hear about it for a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg time..
