Lincoln Beach Kitties...and North Wind Again
#1
[cool][size 2][blue]The north wind blew last night. Hate the north wind for fishing at Lincoln Beach. It turns the water chocolate and the fishing takes a couple of days to recover. TubeBabe and I went anyway. She has been out of town a lot an still had not caught a catfish. That's serious for the "KITTY QUEEN".

Launched off the sand beach in front of the "facilities" about 7:30 AM. Air temp 24 and water temp only 38 in the shallows. Went to 44 in deeper water. Water clarity was terrible but I decided to throw some plastic first anyhooters. After about fifteen minutes of "washing lures", I had a nice thump on the black and chartreuse grub I was using. Same lure I had a little wally on last week. Set the hook and had some heavy head shakes. Too hefty for a small wallie. Yeee Hawww! It had to be a big mama. Well...it was...sorta. A big mama carp...a toothless golden walleye. Had the hook in its lips fair and square. I did a little CPR (Catch, Perforate and Release) as my part of the June sucker recovery program.

Finally got out into the 5 foot deep zone and sent out a minnow on my bait rod. Dragged that bait over a lot of underwater real estate, in the muddy water, without so much as a whisper. I was beginning to wonder if that bunged up buglemouth was going to be my only stick bender for the day. NOPE. Pop...zing...line peeled off the reel as a kitty tried to abscond with my minnow. NOPE. I put a hook in the corner of her mouth and persuaded her to swim to my tube...not without some struggling on her part. 24" and a bit over 4 pounds.

That was at 9 AM. At 9:30 AM TubeBabe announced over the walkie talkie that something had whacked the piece of carp meat she was dragging...but must have been an inexperienced fish. Didn't know how to hang on. A couple of minutes later she was nice enough to allow the fish a second chance and this time the fish got it right. A 26" 6 pounder. TubeBabe had banished the skunk.

At 9:45 the north wind came up. We expected it, since the forecast was for south breezes...again. Two hours later the north wind died for a few minutes. Wiggle wiggle. I caught an ugly mudder. Wham bam...I missed another channel, but TubeBabe landed another one. This one was about 3.5 pounds.

The north wind came back up and the fishing went back down. We quit at 1 PM. No wallies or whities. I lost one small white bass at the tube. Saw very little on sonar. You can see the brown water in the pictures. Not good.

Water temp when we got out was up to just under 48 degrees. Air temp was only a couple of degrees warmer. Saw several boats go out, and return. Also several vehicles with bank tanglers. Nobody stayed long. The guy that stayed the longest stayed only because he ran the back tires of his two wheel drive pickup over the sharp edge at the end of the dike. He was gunning the engine, smoking his tires and probably putting some serious hurt on his engine and tranny when some nice guy in another pickemup helped pull his sorry behind up onto the dike. Wonder if he learned.

TubeBabe was happy. I let her outdo me on kitties again. I got the first, but she got the biggest and the most (big deal...one more). I managed to get three species, but would have loved to bring in a wallie or two and some white bass...to complete my "grand slime". Done it before, but not today. Still beats the heck out of almost anything I could have been doing at home.

It is good to know that you still release those bugle mouth bass unharmed, sort of !! Great pics.

Yes, I must admit, your catch-and-release technique with the golden walleye is something we could all learn from. I am glad there are places like this board where one can come and learn from the best.

Great Report! Congrats TubeBabe on the bragging rights.

[cool][#0000ff]Thanks guys. Would you believe that I had complaints on the Utah board about the Perforated Carp pic? I deleted it to avoid offending the wimps.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Sheesh.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I personally believe that if we took all the carp out of Utah Lake, and strung them end to end, in a line across the Sahara Desert...that would be a good thing.[/#0000ff]

Looks like the link on this board doesn't work any longer either.

Doesn't bother me much. Most the carp I get up close and personal with have an arrow stuck through the middle of them.

The June Sucker Recovery program are going to spend upwards of 60 million of our dollars to remove said fishies as part of the recovery program. So I am not going to loose any sleep over the few that we release unharmed.

Dude, sounds like its about time for me to bust out the FC4 again.... I came on here specifically looking for cattin and carpin info. Just to see if you would lead me to believe the waters were ready. I need to get with you on how to set up my bow for carpin... since I've decided to try my hand at arrowing some bait this year... I'd like to have a lesson or two from you if thats ok. I'd like to hook up for some cattin again too if you don't mind some company once in a while. I still have your number so I'll give you a holler.... or a PM, email etc. Nice report... good to hear you guys aren't the only ones bugged by the wind. Glad Tubebabe got rid of the skunk smell...and then some since this report is a couple weeks old.

[cool][#0000ff]Glad to see that you are comin' out of hibernation. Might be a bit early for all the BEST stuff, but still plenty of tubin' to be done. Won't be long until the carp start comin' in shallow, volunteerin' their lovely selves as targets. Plenty of good places for that.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]If you have a good compound bow, the first thing to do is temporarily take off all the foo foo stuff. You don't need sights and stuff for carpin'. Next, back off the power to about 25 pounds. No need for long straight shots. Up close and personal. If you use a fish arrow, with line, you will need some kind of reel or spool to keep the line on...so it will peel off when you shoot. I am attaching a pic of one I made from PVC (what else???).[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Always glad to have you along. You probably do not have my new phone number. Shoot me an email or PM and I will give it to you. And, feel free to visit anytime you wanna work on tackle or tubeology.[/#0000ff]

Yeah, I apologize for not showing my face more often.... my fault. I spend too much time over at the UW.net site. Do you ever hunt the carp balls that show up all over the lake?? You know where you can see tons of them in open water all bunched up? I don't know if I can drop my bow weight that low.... I think it only goes down to about fifty pounds. I might have to get a separate bow or something..... Do you think open water is the ticket for cattin so far?? Not much happening on the reeds yet? Sounds like thats where you and the Babe are scoring is in open water at various depths.... I'll shoot you an email because I think I lost your number when I left the state job.

[cool][#0000ff]Bring your bow with you when you come over and we will see what we can do to "incarperate" it.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]You are right about the "carp clumps". You will see them on any calm morning these days...large groups of them clustering together at the top to slurp algae or just to socialize. (See pic) They stay on top until the sun gets too bright or a breeze comes up. They are easy to snag but often they will slurp up a small jig if you cast beyond them and swim it slowly into the group. They definitely get the kinks out of your line as well as providing superior kitty chow.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The channel cats will move into shallower water just off the reeds for a while, before the spawn and then will start setting up housekeeping in thick reeds and around rockpiles as soon as the water goes over about 60 degrees. Only about 48 - 50 right now. Mid May is pretty much a sure bet and then you can find fish in the reeds all summer as long as the depth stays deep enough for them.[/#0000ff]
