Tubin for sharks
#1
Today, Joe, Chris, My friend Jess and I went to ALamtios bay again. This time after we caught 6 short halibut, 8 short sandbass 12 turbot and 4 yellowfin croaker and A small dogtooth shark, we got some live bait from some boaters coming back in. We ended up with like 2 scoops of LIVE SQUID, 3 scoops of live dines and chovies and like 3 scoops of fresh dead squid, all for FREE!

I put on a live squid and dropped it down on my 8 lbs setup and got ripped on right as soon as it hit bottom. I swung on it and it took straight drag. I thought it was a halibut or hopefully a short or legal seabass, but when I finally got it up after it spun me around in circles, I saw that it was a BIG dog tooth. Chris had his gaff and stuck it and I saw how big it was, it weighed 8lbs and was 38 inches long![cool]

Not that big but on a diawa triforce reel and a 7'6" lightning rod it was a blast!! Cant wait to hook a leapord shark on it!![Wink]

BIG and small kill em all

i cant wait to see the faces of the ppl who find the shark!!! thats going to be soooo funny!!!

We decided we were gonna toss some plastics ashore because our legs were in agonizing pain from fighting the current most of the day. then aaron says to me,"oh **** joe, look it!" he pointed to my float tube floating away. it was a good 20 yards away from me. definately not good! i guess the tide rose more than i thought it would and took my tube with it.

anyways, aaron, nice fish!

I caught the most out of the group!!! yipeeeee!!!!

What's a dog tooth shark? Did you eat it? Also, did you get your tube back?[laugh][laugh]

[cool]Sounds like fun. You will definitely develop a face problem (Big Grin) when you hook a big leopard...if it doesn't bite you off. Using that squid, you are also likely to get attached to a bat ray or two. They will haul your donut all over the place. Even the small ones pull hard.

Still, if you had your choice, I bet you would rather hook a 30 inch halibut than a 30 pound bat ray.

Good report Aaron. Ain't it great when other fishermen share? Those guys could have just dumped the bait. Glad you guys got lucky.

operation float tube rescue was completed! yay!
i think a dogtooth shark and a smooth hound shark are the same thing. I'm not sure.
It has skin that is grey and brown in color with a white belly.
the head is triangle shaped and it's mouth is on the bottom of the shark. I'm not very good at describing things so if i can i will bring up a picture and post it.

[cool]They attached just fine. You do good work. If you ever have something you want to stick into a post, email them to me at my email address...or send a Private Message. I will upload them, size them (they need to be 400 pixels or less) and post them for you.

As you can tell by now, we like to put up images. It really helps convey what we are trying to get across.

By the way, there is a close cousing to your dogfish (shark)...the spineback dogfish...that has some pretty sharp teeth. I used to catch some big ones both off the end of Seal Beach and Huntington Beach piers at night. If you don't use either heavy mono or wire leader they will chew you off. I have never caught one in the bay though. They are deeper water sharks and the guys who fish for deepwater rockfish often hook them in hundreds of feet of water.

Hey there DH tubinjoe,

I'll bet you caught a grey smooth hound shark, besides the shovelnose shark these guys are the most numberous sharks in our area caught by tubers! Especially abundant in waters where our halibut are lurking! Darn 'em Hope this helps.
