Lake Powell mixed bag
#1
Fishing was great, it was the getting there that was the problem.
Left Utah Co. thurs 5pm with a stop in Price for dinner and last minute supplies from Walmart.
10:30pm and we found ourselves going 60mph about 10 miles before Ticabo, round a corner and there in the middle of the road is a herd of black cows, swerve to the left and we hit a big one, swerve to the right and it's shoulder then a steep drop off, decide to stay straight, and we nail a yearling head on, poor cow never know what hit it, max damage to the front end, have not heard back from the insurance if it's totaled or not. We mad it to a turn out and 1 hour later have a ride to Bullfrog.
Friday morning was spent arranging a tow and getting another truck, luckily a buddy was meeting us friday morning so we could get his truck.
Finally on the water around 11am, this late we went staight to an old standby, a little rubble pile near moki, in the next 2 hours we boated 110 stripers between 3 of us, 2 size classes either 14" or 18" almost nothing in between, larger or smaller, they were all very healthy with a good fight. After filling the cooler we went in search of bass and eyes. Fished Moki, Halls, and Bullfrog for the rest of the afternoon and early evening, ended up landing 13 giant crappie, 5 smallies and 2 largemouth, snagged 1 carp, after a marathon session at the fillet table we were ready for dinner and poker.
Saturday morning found us in forgotten canyon looking for bass, found a few smallies and some more giant crappie in the stick ups. We were only 7 miles north but the water was not quite as warm so we decided to head south, made stop at Moki and boated 22 stripers before the wind came up and blew us off the water, it was a bumpy wet ride back to Bullfrog.
Wind was still blowing 7pm but we were antsy to get back out, launched and went down to the protected area by the gas pumps, managed 1 really good largemouth 3ish lbs then finally said the hell with the wind and got off the water
Sunday wind was still blowing, packed up and left. Totals for the weekend:
100+ stripers
20 crappie
10+ smallies
1 largemouth
300lb cow
Some more pricless Lake Powell memories

Well I am glad to hear the fishing was not to bad. Sorry to hear about the truck, and you did not even get a steak out of the deal. And what a tender steak that would be.

Sounds like a great trip! Yes, that wind at Lake Powell can blow!

I am interested to know about the cow ordeal. Was it open range where you hit the cattle? If so, you may be responsible for cattle also. If it wasn't and the cattle got through the fence or a gate that was left open, the rancher should be responsible for your damages.

That open range area is always spooky at night. Too many big black cattle..... Sorry to hear about your truck, but at least everyone was okay.

Sure is nice to hear about the big crappie coming back!

Too bad about the mishap with the cattle. When we were there in late March I suspected a year class die off. In the big picture this may be the best thing for fishing. Gives the shad some chance to recover while leaving some eating size fish ito catch. There are going to be some big crappies caught this year too

Man....sounds exciting to say the least. I hit a cow once too, back in Idaho where I grew up. I had a '69 chevy 3/4 ton, I swear the thing was made out of cast iron, the cow hardly did a thing to it, but I wasn't going more than maybe 15 mph when I put on the brakes. Sorry to hear about the truck, but sounds like the fishing was good.
