Once is not enough. On June 1, as part of the statewide Open House Day
for Minnesota State Parks, Wild River State Park will be open to the
public without the usual requirement for a Minnesota State Park vehicle
permit. The previous open house, on May 17, has been a spring tradition
for several years. But in honor of Minnesota's Sesquicentennial, all
Minnesota State Parks will be open for day visits free of charge on
Sunday, June 1, and Wild River is included.
<br>The park's visitor center, boat launches, picnic grounds, 35 miles of
hiking trail, 20 miles of horse trail, and 3 miles of bike trail will be
open for use with no vehicle permit required. Horse trail use still
requires a Minnesota Horse Trail pass (daily $5 or annual $21).<br>
<br>If you'd like to take part in a special program, join Park Naturalist
Dave Crawford for a walk into the past. A walking tour of the
present-day landscape where a farm was established 130 years ago begins
at the visitor center on Sunday, June 1, at 2 p.m. Through the use of a
hand-drawn map by Annie Boyce, one of the children who grew up on the
farm, combined with Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, it's
possible to pay an imaginary visit to the house, barns, gardens, pumpkin
patches, and other features of a very different landscape that existed
over a century ago. The "Walk Into the Past" program is free of charge.<br>
<br>The walk is part of the "150 Programs For 150 Years of Statehood"
offered by Minnesota State Parks in recognition of Minnesota's
Sesquicentennial. Part of the walk will be in brushy or tall-grass
areas, so long pants, sturdy shoes, and protection against ticks are
advised. Keep an eye out for additional programs and activities relating
to the observance of Minnesota's Sesquicentennial throughout 2008 on
the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources events calendar at
