Upper Snake Region Fishing Information
#1
South Fork Snake River: The annual controlled flood is happening this week and while it has brought fishing to a standstill, it should be good for the river, its fish and the cottonwood forests the line the bank. High flows will move gravel, and hopefully disrupt spawning for rainbow trout, which should bode well for native cutthroat. It will also help young cottonwoods take root.
Henry's Fork Snake River: The river is now open from top to bottom but the water is a little murky. Stonefly nymphs are attracting fish along with caddis. Look for the salmon flies soon.

Henry's Lake: Angler's lore says that the later the ice out on Henry's, the better the early season fishing. That certainly held true this past Memorial Day opener. Angling was excellent for cutthroat near the shoreline at numerous locations around the lake including: State Park, County Dock, Pintail Point, Buckshot Bay, and the North shore. Fly fishing, bait fishing and anglers using lures all did well at these locations. An occasional brook trout and several large hybrids were also thrown in the mix. It was definitely one of the better openers in several years. Pressure was surprisingly light.

The next few weeks, fish will move and the best locations will change. As the water warms, look for good fly angling on the west side of the lake. Trolling should be good most of the month of June, before the week growth makes that form of angling tough. Bait fishing should also be good, especially off of the cliffs and in the deeper water areas south of Wild Rose.

The lake is currently at 99 percent of capacity and the water temperatures are in the mid 40's. We're off to a good start to the angling season and given good water conditions and good inflow from the tributaries, angling should be good this year.

Island Park: The lake is currently at 101 percent of capacity. Light pressure over Memorial Day meant few reports, but good fishing late last fall means angling should be good this season. The west end of the lake normally fishes well early on. Check for access as boat docks are being put in the next few days.
