Strawberry 6/28/08
#1
Fished Strawberry today with remo_5_0. First tried over near The Ladders. Caught a few over there, but not many. Visited with nobites and the catching was also slow for him. Next we moved out by The Knoles. Caught a few more there also, but nothing to write home about. Decided to see how the fishing was on the north end of Strawberry Bay (it can be good in this area, especially early in the summer). This was a good move, wish that we would have started there first thing in the morning. We found lots of boats fishing this area and most were regularly reeling in fish. Called N.E.T.O. on his cell phone and invited him to join us (he was fishing Mud Creek). As usual he and his cousin showed us how one should go about catching fish. Later in the afternoon the wind started blowing from the north. Decided to try drift trolling and this was also productive. We had most of our luck on tube jigs and similar tipped with a chunk of minnow or with a piece of crawler fishing water from 15' to 23'. Some of those cutts were surprisingly heavy and put up a good fight. It was a pleasure meeting Mike and fishing with him.

Thanks Kent for hooking us up with the good spot! On the way up, knowing you were to be on the Berry today, we had planned on calling you and inviting you over to our secret spot...but our secret spot was no good today. My cousin was up 5 zip on me after 2 hours in our "good spot", just waiting for it to kick in and get good...and it never did. We finally went into Mudcreek proper and I finally got on the board with 1 fish, but that was the one and only fish in about an hour in there. Thats about when we got your call. Thanks again for the invite, we ended up salvaging a pretty good day out of it! And you are right, we caught more big ones today that we have the last couple weeks! Arron caught 5 over the slot, with his biggest at 24" and very thick. Although I almost caught up with Arron's total count by the end of the day, I didn't catch any over the slot. I did have one nice one on that snapped my leader, and never saw him, but he felt heavy. I think I might have said a bad word when that happened. (Like "shoot", or "darn", or something like that...) We also used standard tubes tipped with chub. We left right after you did when our anchor(s) wouldn't hold us anymore. We were very grateful for your phone call today!
Hey Kent, if you get a chance, pm me with some downrigger info. I know you use them, and we are looking in to buying some for our boat and want to know what features to get and what features to skip, etc.
Thanks again for the tip today!

I used to N.ot have E.nough T.ime O.ff to go fishing.  Then I retired.  Now I have less time than I had before. Sheesh.

Tell me something about the kokanee fishig there? Did you try some, see anyone? Also, what is the water temp up there at the Berry and where were most fish showing up on the fishfinder?

If NETO's cousin caught 4 over the slot I would assume the spawn could be over or close to it. The bigger fish are harder to come by while spawning. Whats your thoughts Kent? Did you get any over the slot?

Great reports everyone. Sounds like the fishing was a little slow but still fun.

Wish I could have made it out there!!! Hopefully it will start picking up after the spawn.

We didn't try for any kokanee (I rarely do, but I have a few times in the past) and I didn't see any on the fishfinder. We also didn't see anyone who appeared to be trying for them, but we didn't go by the usual kokanee fishing areas. Water got up to about 63 degrees F.

I don't know if the spawn is over or not. We didn't catch any over the slot. I had one break off when I set the hook on 8' test line, so who knows how large that fish was or perhaps I had a weak spot in the line. In the morning we didn't see any fish in water any deeper than about 20' and most were in water shallower than that. In the late afternoon we saw a few fish down about 15' in deeper water, but most of the fish were still in water 23' deep or shallower. There seemed to be lots of fish in the water that was well under 15' deep, but the biggest problem with that shallow of water is that it has thick sea weed on the bottom and lots of it floating around in the shallower water.

The fishing was surprisingly fast at times and if you were fortunate enough to be in the right place. We saw lots of doubles being caught, and I probably caught over 25 fish (I didn't bother counting), so I have had far worst days up there.

Kent,

If you keep honing your skills in Strawberry waters you are going to have to become a Strawberry professional or "guide." Congratulations on a successful day of fishing.

Incidentally, when did you stop counting the fish you catch at Strawberry?
Incidentally, when did you stop counting the fish you catch at Strawberry?
It all depends on my mood, whether or not I count them. Saturday I wasn't in the mood.
