When I was loading my 9.9 Johnson in the back of the truck the other day a plastic ring chipped and than broke off the back of the prop. does anyone know what this is called adn what it does. It appeared to be just a ring that snaps over the Rear of the prop.
Thanks

Sorry but I can't recall seeing anything like that on any of mine. First thought is part of the lock ring for the nut or a line cutter.Hopefully someone can chime in with more knowledge. Good luck.

[#000000]What year is that motor? We may be able to figure this out through the parts lists or diagrams. [/#000000]

[#000000]Also, look at the diagram on this link:[/#000000]

By your picture, it does not look like the prop spacer. Try and see if it matches the cap like thing in the back of the prop.

[#000000]Okay, I think I just found out what it is. Here look at this:[/#000000]

[#000000]I think it is the prop nut keeper. How big is the one you have in your pictures?[/#000000]

LD if you look at the fist diagram you posted it is part that rises above the main prop body at the end of the prop. It just kind of snaps over the end on the out side of the tunnel.

[#000000]I just looked and see the same thing. It is not what I thought in my second post. It is just a prop hub. Some props come that way, with hubs. Some people put them on themselves. I don't know who made that prop so I don't know how it came. The hubs help with stabilizing and water flow and whatnot on some. They also help protect the back of the prop and nuts/shaft from damage. [/#000000]
[#000000][/#000000]
[#000000]I know that alot of Johnsons/Evinrudes aluminum and steel props come with hubs. As far as what you need to to now it is not much. I know that you can buy hub kits.[/#000000]
[#000000][/#000000]
[#000000]I would call up Johnson/Evinrude and ask them if it is okay to run the motor with the prop hub off. I don't want to give you any wrong advice so I will just suggest calling them. If they don't advise it, I would guess that they will tell you to buy a new hub, they are probably less than $10. Might have something to do with exhaust. Does your motor exhaust out the prop or above water?

Dunno just what they are called but from what I understand they sorta cause a low pressure area right where the exhaust exits the prop which improves engine performance.
