Down riggers
#1
Has anyone ever used or are using the Cannon mini downriggers that just clamp on your boat. I have a jon boat but looking for a good portable that will adapt well to my boat, some room on the back but not alot. I'm on a mission now for some kokes, gonna try to see if i can half master catching some. The boat is small so i really dont want to mount my bigger ones. Any suggestions will help.

Kent (kentofnsl), one of the moderators, uses one. It seems to work great for him. Ask him.

[#0000bf]I used the little Scottys on my 10' Zodiak for a number of years with great success. Not a lot of line length, but enough to get down to Koke levels.[cool][/#0000bf]

When I had a smaller boat I used one similar to the clamp on type. I could use the same rod holder mount that I used for trolling for the down rigger. Here is some pictures of the one I use.

Yup, I used one for 10 years. Its been great. I couldnt afford a nicer one having just been married. It sure beat using sinkers, divers or lead line to get down to depth, and even then you are guessing depth based on the line angle.

Alot of people here will tell someone asking to get a electric or otherwise fancy and expensive downrigger... but truth is, while more expensive ones are nicer in some ways, overall the mini-troll works just fine for someone on a smaller budget. IMO, if you cant afford nicer go with the mini-troll.

I used a 6lb ball on mine, that extra weight let the line hang straighter down which was more accurate but it also let me run 2 poles using a seperate stacker release. Me and my wife fished that way for a long time until reciently when we upgraded to a pair of better model cannon's.

Now the ironic part... due to the new pair of down riggers mentioned above, I listed my mini-troll w/ weight and 2 releases on Ebay reciently. If you are interested here is the auction:

If you have any questions about using them in general just hollar.
