IN GENERAL: Ken and Amy Potter continued their Baja Adventure with a wide open tuna bite that sent them to the swim up bar at the pool for something cold. Double digit tuna can make a person very thirsty. This was the icing on the cake of what could only be described as a perfect week for them on their first trip to Baja. Note: In last Wed.'s condition report we ended with our guide Lance Peterson getting ready to take out clients Ken and Amy Potter with Amy threatening to give up saltwater fly-fishing forever if Lance didn't get her into a fish. Talk about guide pressure! Here's his report from later that afternoon:

"Wow! It went well for us today. The events of the day are too numerous to

go into, but the high point was that I got the lady a HUGE roosterfish. 35-

or 40-pounds at least. It was sooo awesome, she was so stoked. May well have

been the biggest rooster ever hooked by a woman on a fly. She had another

big one eat first cast, but missed it! I had Ken Potter shoot my camera with

slide film to capture us with the beast. It was 45 minutes-plus on a

10-weight rod. She did awesome. What a first saltwater fish huh? I guess

she's over the saltwater hump now! Ken hooked a big jack too, but his

backing birdsnested on him and it broke off. Lots of shots had by all. I can

hardly contain my enthusiasm to get out there and catch a bubba for myself!

Today was a a very rewarding experience to say the least. Starving and

tired, just got back. Talk to you later . . ."

Yvonne and I can’t thank South Bay (Los Angeles area) Fly-Fishing club,

their President Jan Schrumpf and Program Chairman Bob Sawyer enough for inviting us to their meeting last Wednesday. What an enthustasic group! If you live in the Los Angeles Area and want to find a group of folks that share your passion for fly fishing, this South Bay is a good place to start.

· OFFSHORE: Plenty of tuna, marlin with an attitude and dorado that want to play. What are you waiting for?

· BEACH: Here is a yesterday’s phoned in report from our guide Lance Peterson: “Perfect weather and the beach is going off. Out at the beach between Punta Colorada and Punta Arena I got my personal best rooster a thirty pound rocket that made a first run of 300 yards and had me chasing him down the beach. Almost an hour to land and photograph (fortunately, a guy came a long to take the photo’s) on the way back to the house I also caught a twelve-pound jack.

ROOSTERFISH – They are rocking and not many anglers knocking. Beach and inshore is almost scary.

IN GENERAL: Warmed up a tad this week and the fishing followed suit. Pompano, cabrilla, a few leopard grouper and snook make for a mixed bag in the Esteros. The bridge at the entrance to town early morning produced a mixed bag for a few.

Sat, May 10, 2003 Report covers the period Wed.-Fri. (5/7-5/10)

IN GENERAL: The main story and the action is tuna. The yellowfin tuna are here in incredible quantities and the boats are getting some fantastic counts. Most of the action is only 3 to 8 miles out of Zihuatanejo Bay.

A perfect example of the excellent fishing we have was experienced by Don Mawhorter of Seattle, WA and Steve Jarred of Berthoud, Co. The first day, fishing with Santiago on the panga Gitana, they caught 30 yellowfin tuna and 1 sailfish. On the second day they fished with Adolpho on the panga Dos Hermanos. This inshore trip yielded 20 jack cravalle in the 15 to 20 pound class and one roosterfish of 50 pounds.

Along with the tuna, the blue marlin have been very active. Several have been taken and all within 5 miles of the beach. The main reason the marlin are here is the abundance of black skipjack tuna.
