STRIPED BASS - Maybe a slight bit better than last week and thats
not saying much. A little explanation on the ratings. A lot of whats said
here is based on what we think the overall local fishing is now. If
the guy down the dock is getting a bunch of cows every morning doesn't
mean that the striped bass fishing is good overall. There are pockets of
some very good striped bass catching but overall there seems to be less
bass than previous years spread out in the area.
There were some reports of a pick of nightime bass at Hatchetts,
Black Point and Long Sand Shoal. Southwest Reef and Duck Island are fishing
well with live bait early in the day.Theres still a pick of schoolies
along the Old Lyme shore and the Watch Hill area. Daytime tube and worm
is the best bet with a bit of dusk surface action.
A couple of bass were taken from the Saybrook Point by shore chunkers
along with very few blues this week. The RI beaches also have a few
schoolies at dusk and a few more if you plug the night.
BLUEFISH - The Race is still hot and Plum gut is almost as good.
Sizes are mixed with most fish running under 8 pounds. The hunt for big
blues starts this week in preparation for next weekends WICC Contest. The
Race and Gut are outside the contest area and usually don't yield big
blues. The bigger blues tend to hang out at the river mouths and
smaller reefs. They don't travel in big schools at this time of year so don't
expect a lot of action in the quest for the big one.
For some surface action they're still up on top during slack tide at
the Race and can be seen in some schools off Old Lyme at dusk.
The WICC Bluefish Contest is scheduled for August 23-24 this year, a
bit earlier than most years. We have entry blanks and shirts.
SNAPPER BLUES- River action was mediocre this week with the effects
of flooding still bringing a lot of brown water down. The Causeway is
fair and the Blackhall and Lieutenant River are a bit better bet.
FLUKE- Reports in the shallower water off Old Lyme and the River
were light this week. The deep waters (60+ feet) off Old Lyme are still
producing some doormats. The RI reports are still good with both sides of
Block Island producing.
PORGIES - Its good with size and numbers at most of the local reefs.
BLACKFISH - Those trying are catching their limit (2 fish) with
regularity. Finding crabs for bait has been the hard part.
BLUE CRABS - Crabbing numbers are fair with the River still on the
slow side for spotting due to dirty water. Oyster, Blackhall and
Lieutenant Rivers are also fair on traps.
BONITO, FALSE ALBACORE - We had the first reports this week of
bonito at the Watch Hill area. That was mid week and they should be
spreading out with a concentration in RI by the time you read this.
