Non-Tox reloaders?
#1
Anyone out there reload non-tox (steel, bismuth, heavy shot)? Looking at trying to save some money and gain some performance. I want to load something in a 12g with a heavier payload that i can get 1550 fps out of. Preferably in a 3" shell. Progressive loader? Single stage? What are your thoughts? The group I shoot with we go through about 4 cases a year in steel shot and about 6 cases of lead.

It is pretty pricey to reload right now and you get some bang for your buck shells at you local walmart. Steel shells at 1550fps 1-1/8 oz is about as fast as your gonna get even with a reload, the more shot the slower and the pressure is outragoues as well. MEC reloaders have never let me down, we got a 600jr and 9000 progressive series. you do have to exchange out a few things to do both the lead and the steel loading on the 600, but if you do just steel than they have the steelmaster. on the progressive you can load nearly 2 cases an hour where on the single stage your 8-10 boxes an hour
Right now With supply costs and the amount you shoot it probably would be more econmical for you to just buy shells, if you need a new hobby reloading can be fun and there is endless possiblilities of target loads to rhino rollers.

I reload both lead and steel in 12g and lead in 20g. I have a MEC 600 jr for the 20g chore and a Pacific for my 12g. Both are great presses (single stage). As already pointed out steel is cheaper to buy already loaded. I save a little with lead though. This year Ducks Unlimited offered a screaming deal on Reminton Sportsman shells. I bought 5 cases of 3" 12g mags and another case of 3.5" super mags. The 3" mags at 1 1/8oz of steel #2's were $9.00/box and the 3.5" super mags with 1 3/8oz steel BB's were $11.60/box. Thats is WAY cheap! Both shells were speedsters at 1500fps. That is faster than the steel reloads I was reloading which were clocking out at around 1250-1300 fps with a 1 oz load in 2 3/4" shells and 1 1/8oz load in the 3" mags both with #2 steel. Look for good deals in January and February when Wally's is clearing out their steel, or join DU and talk to the state chairman about pre-ordering in the spring for delivery in the fall.

I still load steel only because I bought the shot years ago when it was relatively still inexpensive. I don’t reload much lead anymore because I no longer shoot competitively.

If you are looking to save money on steel, forget it. Kent’s is still cheaper then reloading. Estate (steel) is even cheaper, but I’ve never got it to pattern worth a crap out of anything I’ve owned.

If your looking for reloading info, PM “dubob”. I still use his 12ga, 7/8oz target loads he taught me years ago on everything upland. It’s the ones with Green Dot. I bet he’s improved upon them over the years
