Anglers near and far, get ready to cast a line and hold out for "the big one" — the fourth annual Bay Harbor Fishing Tournament is drawing near.
This three day event, which takes place Sept. 5-7 at the Bay Harbor Lake Marina, is the final stop on the Tournament Trail’s 333 Championship Series which began in Ludington in July.
Professional and amateur fishermen alike are invited to enter the Salmon/Lake Trout tournament for a fee of $350 per boat, with a limit of four people aboard.
In 2007, 37 boats participated in the event, which John Russell, harbor master and director of the Bay Harbor tournament, says is growing.
“This year our goal is 50 boats,” he said. “Each year we’ve had a progressive increase in the number of participants — we’re trying to build this (tournament) not only for Bay Harbor, but for our local economy.”
Last year, around $15,000 in prize money was given away to participants, with $5,000 being the top prize.
Russell said this year’s giveaways will be based on the number of participants — however, he said, the top prize will still be up to $5,000.
“This is just a fun competitive event, and it’s a really good chance for local people to win some money,” he said. “There’s a lot of everyday fishermen out there, and a guy who’s going out fishing anyway on Saturday can enter, and this gives him a chance to win some extra funds."
“This also brings people closer to the natural resources we have in our backyard,” Russell said.
Other prizes being given away during the tournament are the $500 “Big Bud” prize, sponsored by Huron Distributors, Inc., of Indian River, which will be awarded to the largest catch of the tournament, as well as a $500 cash prize to be awarded to the angler with the largest catch on both Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 6 and 7, which is sponsored by Lake Michigan Yacht Sales.
Other sponsors for the tournament include Taxidermy by Lasting Memories, Odawa Casino & Resort, Bay Harbor Properties, the Village at Bay Harbor, Bay Harbor Lake Marina, ValvTect, Stinger Lures and many more.
To enter the tournament a person must be old enough to obtain a valid fishing license in the state of Michigan.
Those interested in participating can either go to Bay Harbor’s Web site, www.bayharbor.com, click on the “News & Events” link on the lower left-hand side, then click on “Even Registration” in the drop-down box to print off a registration packet; or contact Russell at the Bay Harbor Lake Marina at (231) 439-2544.
