unraveling fly
#1
my sister is trying to learn how to fly fish. She has been catching blue gill down at the bountiful pond. She seems to have a problem with her flys unraveling after using them for a little while. I am guessing it has to do with her casting. Can any one tell me what might be causing this? I am not a fly fisherman per say so I have no clue.

One of two things, they are cheaply tied flies, OR she is nicking the thread when she removes the hook from the fish.[Wink]

Put a VERY small drop of super glue on the heads of the flies. I do that with all of mine, instead of head cement. They never come unraveled, whether tied by me, or some one in China or Sri Lanka.

In addition to what has already been mentioned, is she using hemostats? If so, debarb the hook and you won't need the hemostats anymore (or need them much less). Since you're not smashing the fly with the hemostats, it will last a lot longer. Barbless will also help in the case of a errant cast the lands the fly in the flesh...
