CWMU hunt
#1
I drew a CWMU deer tag this year and had a great time. There is a CWMU located right across the road from a family cabin. It has always been private property so I have never actually been in the area before, but have spent many hours glassing animals on the hillside from the porch of our cabin.

We have seen some nice bucks over the years, but nothing too mosterous, so I had a pretty good idea of the types of bucks that are in the area. There are some poor genetics in the unit right now, with very few bucks being 4 X 4 or larger. The majority of bucks being seen are 4 X 3's, 3 X 3's or large 2 X 3's.

I had four days to hunt, so one part of me wanted to patient and hunt all four days. The other part of me wanted to shoot something early on and spend the remaining days fly fishing some of my favorite waters in the area.

Long story, short, I ended up shooting this buck on the first night of my hunt. One of the reasons I shot this deer is because it was in the canyon that sits right above our cabin. You can actually see where I shot the deer from our cabin. My oldest boy (10 yrs) was disappointed as he wanted to go on this hunt. Now, everyime we visit our cabin, we can look up and relive the experience over and over again.

He ended up being 3 X 3 that is 25" wide and 25" inches tall. Not the biggest deer around, but a trophy in my book.

I spent the remaining two days fly fishing anything that had water in it. I tried a few places I had always wanted to try and was not disappointed. One day I caught 12 fish over 18" that ranged from rainbows, to cutthroats to browns to tigers.

I couldn't have asked for a better experience in our lovely mountains that what I had this last week!!!

That is a dandy of a deer! I would be very happy with him. How about some more info: Gun, caliber, ammo used and how far was the shot.

What is that lake in the background?

I was more than excited to harvest this buck. The reservoir in the background is Scofield and our cabin sits in the group of cabins you can see in the picture.

I shot the deer right from where the picture is taken of the reservoir. The buck was standing in between the little quakie patch and the juniper trees at the top of right of the picture.

He was about 180 yards away. I was shooting a Winchester model 70, .270 caliber with 130 grain bullets.

I hit him a couple of times before he finally fell about 60 yards from where he was first spotted.

Nothing wrong with that buck, he's a nice one. I like the tall bucks better than the wide ones anyway,

I know that canyon that you shot him in, I look up in there when I'm up there too. My cousin owns the big cabin on the shoreline with the red roof. His name is Burk Priest, do you know him???
