missed and still got my elk.
#1
i know how? well i missed a spike at first light. we had bulls sceaming in the darkness as we arive my spot. a pumpkin army came in and droped right down into the 2 draws. i had a bull closing in on my cow calls in the quakes 400 yrds below me. 3 other guys come in and start bugling i stood up about 40 yrds from them. they came over i told them the jist of what i was doing and then they walked right down onto the bull. shot and missed. and all the bulls kept sceaming. about 12 or so in the 2 draws. then war. 6 bulls down in 5 mins. then i missed that spike running in the quakees. soo we started out about 2 hrs later. on the way i found a cow some one shot and walked away from. looked around and found 2 casings. then my boy his first elk hunt asked why i was so pissed? i then told him how we have to report it. to many people dont and that this could eat up the rest of the day waiting for fg to get there. we made it back to the truck warmed up and up pulls the fg. perfect i told cody. reported the elk and she gave it to me after my boy took her back to it and i brought assistance to bring it out. i was way proud of him. he had only been in 1 time in the dark . out in the light. and it was 2 1/2 miles in. i still have my tag she wrote me a cow tag for assisting the investigation. and my boy learnd how to show up when he see,s it. win win win!!!

Awesome, you have earned my respect. Too bad the idiot who shot it walked away which brings me to wondering. What happens if you do 'accidentally' shoot a cow (or doe)? Should you contact the authorities to let them know what happened, are you putting yourself in jeopardy? How would you contact the f&g while up in the hills if you did have reception? I stopped a buddy a few years ago from shooting because of all the does mixed in with three bucks. (he is not the best aim). I'm not justifying taking a risky shot but you know it happens every year and people just turn their back. What is the right thing to do? I'm not sure how to put this as I would hopefully not take a questionable shot but what if?

there are no acidents with a trigger. as hunters we are acountable for many moore things than just the hunt. we are all ambassitors of this sport. we get to show up with as such!!! yes if you kill the wrong animal you have broken the law. yes you put yourself at jepordy. fine. no loss of privlages. and you loose the tag for a bull or buck. but depending on how you show up. judges will suspend the fine and give a probation time for no trouble at all in your space. i a car wreck. others say acciddent. if you screw up what is the rpice. does your loved one deserve the accountable party to show up? how would this be differnt? its like this. accountabillity is a 100 % thing or you dont have it at all. 99% ????? you have none becaulse its choice of when. ill stop now . as you can tell im big on this issue. my kids get it every day!!!

What a great lesson for your son. Glad to hear the fg handled it so well.

I have talked with a couple of people about this today and Saddly the first response from them all was so did the fg try and pin it on them.

I understood the first couple sentences but you lost me after that. I didn't mean to offend you, if I did. Just curious how a situation like I explained could be handled the right way.

If F&G could learn the difference between a poacher and an honest hunter who screwed up, less game would be wasted. Any hunter when shooting at game in heavy brush could hit an unseen animal just feet away from the animal being targeted. Sometimes it really is an accident, but whenever it happens instead of calling F&G the hunter walks away. Why? Because we all know a story where a hunter does the honest thing and F&G treats them like a poacher. I try to hunt in a way where this would never be an issue, but if I ever do hit the wrong animal, I will not take my chances with F&G.

hmmmm? it was no accident if some one shot at running targets or standing still. before you pull the darn trigger make sure its clear shot at the 1 you want. if you dont and you hit something else how does that make it an accident???? man people are so afraid to do the right thing. even when it comes to pulling the trigger!!! no accountabillity. all just excusses to me... and shows the amount of integritty or lack of that others posses.[:/][:/][:/] glad i dont live like that.[cool]

Ok, let's get past the bs and answer some questions. It's clear that there are no accidents.

So, you missed a spike running thru the quakies? Are you sure you didn't hit that cow? All I'm saying is that accidents do happen. I'm surprised that someone who is "glad i dont live like that" would take a shot at a running spike thru the trees and then preach to us about ethics and your own high level of integrity. I think you did the right thing, and if I hit a cow it would be the "right" thing to turn myself in. Still wouldn't do it. Some things are worth going to court, losing my hunting privileges, paying steep fines and being treated like a criminal. Hitting a cow because I didn't see her thru the brush behind a big bull would not be one of them. Go ahead and rant, it falls on deaf ears.

ya im sure. the cow and calf went in long before the spike and the spike enterred the tee,s about 60 yrds past where she went. but he was fallowing the old girl. and yes the foot prints lead right to the casings the guy shoots a flipping land cannon. i get your point. wish i had a pic to show you this spot. no way i can hit anything but a tree or the dirt. ken

There is also the possibillity that some one had a cow tag made a bad shot and could not find it or is there no cow tags in the area

I'll try. Don't move or touch the animal. Don't even gut it. They will want to see everything as it is most likely. Go to the first place your phone will work or there is a phone and call. Then meet whoever they send out where they tell you too. It's that simple to turn yourself in.

A friend of mine watched a guy shoot a moose on the deer hunt a few years back and then take off. As soon as they got phone service they called the DWR. They were told the guy was the first to call and they were taking care of it. I didn't follow the case so I don't know what happened to him but turning himself in before everyone else did probably helped.

Is there a general phone #? If so, what is it? I don't plan on poaching but if I see someone else it would be nice to have the number.

The numbers Brody just posted are right. They are also printed on your license.

Never needed to report myself but have used the number at Strawberry a couple of times.

I guess if I was more of hunter I would know that it was on the license but I only look at it twice a year. Once when I get and once when I tag the animal [Wink]. Thanks LH2, that's what I was looking for
