I’m going to make this short, which is not my style but I am exhausted.
Bigguyone1 and I had arranged to fish together. When I read his commentarty I had a hard time believing him, but he readily answered my questions and his comments made sense.
I am obsessed with Pike and he appears to be an expert so we agreed to fish together. I was hopeing I would get a lesson or two that will allow me to increase my success at Yuba.
I have caught several big pike this year and during previous years however, I haven’t been able to do it with any regularity. My hope was that he could bridge the gap between my zeal and his knowledge and pike experience.
I was up at 4:30 AM expecting snow on the ground. It was 25 degrees as I got the boat ready. At six o’Clock sharp Bigguyone1 arrived at my house in SF. We introduced ourselves and were off to Yuba. It was just breaking day light when we arrived. Air temp was 27 degree and water temp was 56.2. This is 10 degree colder than it was last Thursday.
We slowly movewd up the lake as BGO1 explained in depth his battle plan. I listened and watch intently as he selected a huge spinner bait from his tackle box. He talked as he cast. Within minutes he was fast to a pike, a big pike. Still explaining he deftly released the fish and continued to cast. Minutes later......Wham another big pike. A
came over his face and he commented on the size of these fish. He had never fished Yuba and didn’t know what to expect. By 9:00AM he had put 3 big and I mean big pike in the boat.
By noon he had caught 6. All over 30 inches and 3 of them over 37 inches and approaching 20 pounds. Six pike that totaled over 90 pounds. All released after a quick photo. These fish were so big and so violent that they literally destroyed the net, a couple straighted swivels, broke leaders and generally haised hell in the boat. It was an exc iting excilerating experience that I won’t soon forget and the lesson I learned will be with me a long time.
Before it was over early in the afternoon we had withstood the cold and blustery weather BGO1 had caught 7 SEVEN giant pike. 4 over 38 inches pushing 20 pounds and 4 over thirty inches and over 10 pounds. Over 100 pounds of fish. All released for someone else (perhaps me) to catch. If you want to know how he did it, you’ll have to ask him but it was exactly like he told me he was going to before we left. BGO1 is a gentlemen and a true master and what he does. If I wasn’t so tired I’d explain more. All I can say is it was “ONE HELL OF A DAY!)
Incidentally I did manage to catch one fish about 24 inches, but watch out next time!
I don't know about the pictures. I took over 60 and I'm so tired I'm not sure of the resizing. Hope they work
