I was at the lake to fish last week and was walking along the beach and saw these holes. They were so smooth and round. What made them?

My hypothesis would be that it is a result of hydrostatic pressure due to a natural aquifer reacting to some sort of heat stimulus.
Is this in UT or ID by chance? There has been known volcanic activity in the past in those states.[shocked] [signature]

no this was on a beach in southern Indiana last weekend. there were quite a few more of these holes. I only took pics of 2 though. They were all over the beach

It could still be hydrostatic related. Non geothermal.[cool]

Looks like a sink hole to me. Seen some small ones at RI beaches.

That is weird, I've seen some clams make holes but not that big, if that's a clame hole, I don't want to see the clam. Maybe a kid dug some holes in the past and then they washed out with rain or something.

How big are the holes?

the ones in these pics are about 2' by 4'. There were a bunch of them all different sizes all over the beach. But they were all very smooth

I gotta ask, did it rain a day or two before you saw the holes? One has water in it and the other shows it had water in it by the rings along the sides just like a reservoir when it drops. It could be the consistency of the sand kinda like a sink hole effect.

yes it did rain. Quite a lot actually. It was very windy too
