What is the trick???

Hey,
I was at Big Cottonwood Canyon today trying out a fly and some new 7x leader line. When I had the fly tied on it was like a slinky, i tried streatching it alittle, but it still wanted to coil. You think it might be the cold. I haven't used 7x for drys only droppers.
I got three brookies that I landed, and one that shot my line into a bush. I was using a #20 BWO.

I first have to ask...WHY 7X? But, that is your choice. Next I will ask, what brand. You cannot pull on 7X as it will stretch and pig tail.
A lot of moisture on knots.
Just a few things to think about.

I've never found a 7x leader that performs well. Stick with the 6x for those small streams.

5X will work fine, even with #20's, and then you can pull it between your thumb and forefinger to stretch it straight. Run your fingers down the tippet a few times to heat it up, and the coils will come out.

I have noticed this same problem when I have tried to use 5X with a large dry like a hopper. The solution for the hopper problem has been to move to a larger diameter tippet (3 or 4X). It has not seemed to bother the fish much. I generally reserve 7X for very picky fish and very small dries (size 26 or smaller). I have had better success using 6X with most BWO dries (size 18 to 24).

[] I have never fished Big Cottonwood. I have fished Tanners Flat in Little Cottonwood but was unsuccessful. I will have to try Big Cottonwood out! Do you think it is too late in the season now to drive up with the snow and all? I am relatively new to fly fishing so all I know about slinky lines is to use a line straightener like a "samadu" or use an old piece of rubber like from a bicycle innertube and pinch your line between it and pull to generate some heat to straighten the line.
