Best Freshwater Waters In Eastern/ Mid-Eastern U.S.
#1
Ok so we all know that the Great Lakes are goldmines for trophies, but in your opinion what are the best bodies of water from say, Michigan east, and areas of the Lakes that are your best shot at trophies?

I've done a lot of fishing in Michigan and have to say that the Huron River Chain O' Lakes is probably my best area. I'll probably butcher this, but here goes: They include Portage,Zukey,Strawberry,Baseline,Whitewood and Gallagher Lakes. I go there for the Pike bite every year and catching 8-10 inch bluegill is not uncommon. There is also good walleye fishing, but they are harder to catch since the pike are the big dogs in those lakes. I've caught several nice flatheads out of there too. The thing I like about it is that you can go out on a pontoon and get to all of the lakes without leaving the water.

I live in Western PA and we have alot of nice little lakes around here. One of my favorite has got to be Lake Arthur. If you would like a trophy Muskie this aint a bad place to look. 50 + inches is not uncommon there. another place i like is the Pymatuning. Also great for muskie. I go there for the bass though. People come there from all over PA and Ohio for the walleye, which is probly the best in the state, well except for Erie. Right around my house there are plenty of lil lakes i like to fish that only permit electric motors, and man the bass fishing here is great! I sometimes wonder if PA's next record bass is gonna come out of one of these little lakes? Who knows, im sure someday i will find out!

I gotta say Toledo Bend in Louisiana. No "monsters" from a California perspective but loads of quality fish. I've fished this lake with some friends, once every spring, for the last few years and it has been fantastic.Largemouth, Stripers,Hybrids, and Sac-o-lets, with a few cats thrown in and some various large junk fish. However, this year we are meeting at Lake Amistad, perhaps to start a new tradition.

I would have to concur that Toledo Bend is a great fishery, especially in the spring.

Where else can you take full limits of 5 pound and better fish out of only three feet of water.

As an avid warm-water flyfisher, I would have to rank that experience way up at the top.

I'd also rank Reelfoot Lake, on the Kentucky/Tennessee border, as a top lake. It's particularly known for its spring crappie (in fact, until recently, it was the only lake I know of that supported a commercial crappie fishery). Plus the top-water fishing for largemouth, back in the cypress thickets, can't be beat.

Any of the TVA lakes and similar impoundments in the south offers quality fishing for a diversity of species. Lake Champlain, in New York, is probably one of the most underutilized larger lakes in the northeast. And, of course, any of the incredible striped bass lakes from North Carolina & Virginia westward are well worth fishing.

But the fact remains, there are so many great waters in the eastern U.S. that listing them would be a non-stop proposition.
