ice ducer for fishfinder
#1
I am just getting ready for the ice season and getting ready for my break from classes coming up in december and was wondering if anyone on here knows what model of transducer works best through the ice for a lowrance 102c, It is the one I use on my boat, but I don't have an extra tranducer to use through the Ice and I would like to have one. I have a simple cabelas markum flasher type, but when I tried to test it earlier this year I couldn't get a signal so I want to have a backup in case I can't get that one working. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I haven't been fishing in months and am looking forward to finally having a break from class to go again,

Jed, that is the same model that I use both on my boat an on the ice (when I am not using my Vexilar). Lowrance sells an ice transducer for that model (at least they did when I purchased mine). I highly recommend that you also purchase a Vexilar float to use with it, rather than the steel rod that they sell for it.

hey kent insted of the vexilar float.. go to walmart in the bike area.. get the black fome thing that go's on the handle bars.. it's like 5 bucks.. and the black color helps keep ice from bilding in the hole,, the one i got works better then the vexilar one did! [shocked]..

Cabala's caries a float and its yellow and probably cheaper then the vexilar one.

Great idea Ron. How do you keep it from sliding up the cable?

That would be another option, but not sure how well it would work if the ice is thick, because it appears that the metal rod would limit how far one can drop the transducer below the top of the ice.

you could use it with or without the rod, i just chose to use it with.[Wink]

i use zip tie's around the fome to hold it on the cable.. then i cheet a little.. i still had a stopper from my ducer on the velx that the dog got ahold of! [shocked]

but i think a zip tie would work there as well.. [sly]

but to tell ya the truth i dont use anything on my ducer any more. i just drop it down tell i see it's under the ice wrap the cable around the handle of my finder holder and fish!

hey jason does the transducer work right when it is facing down like that. I though you had to have them the same direction as you normally do when they are on the boat?

Jed,

I like seeing guys build their own ice fishing units. I have purchase two different factory built units from Cabela's and in both cases was disappointed and rebuilt them after I got them.

Just in the last couple of years, I have built five ice fishing units. The first two worked OK but the last three were much better designed.

Here are the last two I built.

I have got all of my ice unit transducers from Fish-Lectronics. They are very good to work with and very knolwageable. They know exactly which ducers go with which heads. If you are all set up with a fish finder in your boat and want to use the head on the ice and leave your boat ducer on the boat, the guys at Fish-Lectronics can put you right on the parts you need. And for a very reasonable price too I might add.

Here is a good link with pictures and discussion on the very topic you are asking about.

But anyway, to answer your question, I would definately consider using the "bell" ... "self-leveling" type ducer. Again, call Fish lectronics and they can tell you which one fits your machine.

Here is a pic of how I set mine up. I use the float with the rubber pinch stopper on a nylon string. The ducer self-levels to point straight down and there is no weight on the cable to the ducer. All of the weight is on the string. That's just a personal thing ... I don't like the weight of the ducer pulling on the cable.

Here is a better look at the pinch stopper in the float:

I have quite enjoyed building these ice fish finding units in the past and would be glad to help you put one together. No charge for the labor. You just come up with the parts. Fun project.

No, I don't. I ordered it from Reeds Sporting Goods online.

Thanks for the advice and I may just take you up on that offer. I already converted a small cooler into an ice fishing unit holder, but I don't have a good mount system set up and I installed the transducer in the boat so I need to pick up the new ducer. I did find the exact model finally with some research it is the PTI-WBL 106-94. Thanks again.

hey just wanted to say thanks again for all the advice. I picked up the transducer I needed with some cabelas points I had saved up and rigged everything up except for a mount on my portable cooler. I am still frying to figure the best way. I forgot to grab an extra power cable though, but when I found out they were selling for around 40-60 bucks I found the pinout diagram and built my own power cable for about 2$ and it works perfectly. Thanks all for the advice, now all we need is some ice so I can test it all out,

You probably already know this, but you DON'T need ice to test it out! I sometimes go with people who have a boat but no fishfinder, and I take my ice fishing setup along and it works great! If aluminum boat, and a little water is in the bottom (leaky boat!), just set the ice-ducer flat side to the bottom of the boat in the water that has leaked into the boat and it is just like a high-speed transducer on the back of the boat. Shows a clear picture while moving. Once stopped it shows an extra clear picture (as long as there is a half inch of water or so under it, inside the boat). If no water inside the boat, you won't be able to use it as a high speed unit, but once stopped, works GREAT for jigging, just throw the transducer with float out in the water, turn of the head unit and go jigging!

I used to N.ot have E.nough T.ime O.ff to go fishing.  Then I retired.  Now I have less time than I had before. Sheesh.

thanks for the info. I have never tried it inside a boat. I didn't think you could get a good picture that way, but it sounds like it works fine. I will have to see if I can get a chance,

A ram mount is the way to go.

Amen to the Ram Mount. They may seem a bit pricy but they last a LONG time and work very good. Sportsman's have them.
