Devils Creek Derby
#1
A friend and I went down to the derby on saturday but didn't have any luck. We caught a few fish but nothing that had any size to it. I don't think that we were in a very good spot but thats only the second time I have fished Devils Creek. We fished out from the boat ramp towards the middle.

I went down there and fished it on wendsday to try it out before the derby and caught alot of fish but the biggest was a 13 incher. I was getting action all day at that spot, till about 4:00 when I left. That spot was by the north boat ramp fairly close to the shore.

So we decided to try another spot the day of the derby to try and get into some bigger fish but that didn't pan out like I hoped.

We stayed till dark trying to at least catch a few nice fish and moved back to where I fished on weds. but didn't get another bite after about 3:30pm. Does the bite always go off like that or was it because of the derby?

How did everyone else do that got in the derby? Hopefully I can find out where they catch the bigger fish so I can try it again.

This was the 2nd year I fished the tournament. I fish between the ramp and the dam in 17'- 20' of water. no bites the first hour, then the first fish I caught was a LMB. Slow the rest of the day, caught about 6 six bows in the 13" range. I found the bite was very light and had to hook the fish too. I always have fun ice fishing. Not sure if I will do the tournament again?

I fished in about the same area as luv2hookm. The day was fairly slow for me too. Not much action on the vexilar. I probably would have moved but I didn't notice many people waving their green hats to signal the judges on other areas of the lake. I picked up 3 small fish below the 15" mark before 1:00 p.m. . Then at 2:00 p.m. the action picked up. I caught 4 small rainbows- all carbon copies of each other probably 12 to 13". My last fish of the day turned out to be a 19 1/2" rainbow that put me in second place. I'm glad I stayed put. The first place fish was 19 3/4 inches- the awesome part is that a kid caught the fish.

Most of the fish I caught were about 1 foot of the bottom. I tried about everything in my box, from maniac ice cutrs to small ice jigs tipped with waxies. The maniacs and bigger stuff seemed to draw more attention, but the fish would show up on the finder take a quick look and leave. That being said most of the bigger fish caught that day were on Pink maniac ice cutrs.
I don't think there is one spot on the lake that is better for big fish than another. I have yet to find a place that the fish are stacked in.

I fished the durby mid lake west shore in about 20ft to 25ft of water. I caught 18 incher in the second hr. And got some free stuff and also won in the raffle. Better than all 10+ yrs at Sulfer Creek. And the fishing was great. (for a durby) All rainbow trout.

Thanks Evanston Loins for canceling! [Wink]

My nephew and I fished it on the east side near the mouth of the cove north and east of the dam. I caught either 13 or 14 (can't remember for sure) and my nephew caught one more than me. Between us, the only one we caught that qualified was caught by my nephew and it scored at 15 flat.

I had one fish that bit and when I set the hook, I wasn't gripping the rod firmly enough for a bigger fish (I guess because all I was getting was smaller stuff) so I lost my grip on the rod when the fish didn't give as I set the hook. Anyway, I am convinced it was a pretty good fish and likely would have been in contention, but alas, I didn't get him. When I dropped the rod, he was still on there for a second, because I saw the line go tight and the rod moved, but by the time I picked it up he was gone.

I also had one fish on finder that stayed there for about 45 minutes. He hit a couple of times, but I couldn't seem get him. Finally he just disappeared off the finder. I am guessing he was a LMB, but it is only a guess. It is the first time that has happened to me.

In all, it was a lot of fun and it is likely I'd do it again.[Smile]

[Wink] Thanks again for a great time once again. Your sponsors are the best.

This was my second year and this event is better than Evanston any year I attended.

Logan has ordered a 32" flatscreen for his bedroom with some of the winnings.

Lucky Bugger.

Same as always, I catch more fish and he catches the bigger one.

We will be back again next year.

I fished the derby mid lake west shore in about 20ft to 25ft of water, had some guy walk up next to me, drill a hole not more than 4 feet from my hole and catch a 18 incher. Dont you love people like that?

Devils needs to go back to the two day derby. Thats were sulfur creek has them beat. Even though the second day always seems slower it is still a good reason to be out on the ice and maybe some of us could win one of those $100 hourly prizes? Think about it for next year.

Fished Sulfur Creek for years. It went down hill years ago. Its a long drive with the extra expense of needing to stay overnight for the second day. Tons of people and very few fish caught after several years at the event. In the early years they had poles, augers and reels for do prizes. On my last trip, if you were lucky you might get an extra orange cap for a door prize. With that large of an event the real odds of you getting a hourly fish even on the second day when the bite is even worse is slim to none. Limited number of entries and Malads limited overnight capabilities makes the one day event best choice in my opinion.
