[#800000]While I was at the gun club yesterday, I heard a report of a couple of snowmobiles breaking through the ice on Strawberry last Monday. Nobody was lost or injured and the snowmobiles were recovered. Or so the story went.[/#800000]

A guy that I work with, who lives in the Kamas area, dumped a couple of snowmobiles in the berry a few weeks ago. I didn't get a lot of the details, but here's what I know. Both sleds, and both drivers got out. One sled was in about 8 feet of water, and the other in about 12.

Though I haven't heard anything about your story, I can believe it. There are several places where springs create thin ice even when there is 12"+ all over the lake.

One of the worst springs that gets a lot of people is right off the island going into Renegade. There have been a lot of snowmobiles and 4wheelers that have gone through there. Also there are places in the Narrows that have thin ice when the lake is froze solid.

I'm sure there are a lot of people who have made the run from Strawberry Bay Marina to the Ladders or across the lake and seen the big holes in the ice. Some of those could swallow a machine.

Like RDDRM8E says , there is some ice to watch out for going to Renegade . It is the Old Indian Creek Dike area next to the island . It has seen its share of snowmobiles and wheelers and almost got me once . Sometimes it is mostly covered with ice but can be thin . It will only take once to remember where it is if you find it .

about two years ago my friend Glen was crossing strawberry and hit a patch of open water in the fog. he said it was maybe 50-60 feet across. He said it scared the crap out of him but he just throttled up as high as he could and crossed right over it.

scary.

I'm terrified of going through the ice on a sled. we take 2 so if I do the second one can get me out. we drive old sleds too so if we drop one we're only out a few hundred bucks.

I was up at strawberry yesterday and the guy at the marina told me that 4 machines went through last week alone. I was pretty surprised, he said that they were all in the narrows or at least on your way to the narrows. He did specifically say that one of them was coming from Renegade going to the narrows, not quite there yet. must be that warm spring or something. Anyways, I guess it is not uncommon for people and or machines going through up there. Pretty scary, be careful..

By the way, fishing was slow for me, it was a windy blizzard all day and I do not have a tent yet, so it was pretty miserable. I did manage a few though, one was a dandy cut, 23-24 inches.
