Wild Northern Pike
#1
Well the grayling went up and down the creek before the lures got wet, but did manage to get 1 1/2lb. The suckers are crowding them out, but the pike are really starting to turn aggressive. Took the wife and kids for an hour Tuesday night and caught a mess of fish in the 5 to 8 lb range.

Alot of them had marks from attacks so I'm going back this weekend to find the monsters who will attack a 8lb fish. The ice is going quick so it will soon be time to surface fish for lake trout.

If all else fails there's always those gator toothed critters who will strike at a pop can if presented right. If anybody has any special pike lures let me know and I'll give them a try. Always looking to try something different.[Wink]

and i thought i had it bad wating for ice-out ! how long is the ice fishing season up there ?

keep an eye on our product testers board , there's been some big lures promoted there , even some contact info as well .

there's a 16 species big fish contest going on till october , a couple monsters like those you describe can get you a great prise if you win !

The ice is on the lake by october and off most small lakes by end may mid june. You can usually get on Great Slave Lake by 1st week of July.

The Lakes are breaking on time if not a tad early this year. Just waitting for the ones that are open to warm up a couple degrees so the fish get more active. I'll find the web site link and post it for Yellowknife, for all to enjoy.[Smile]

The ice is on average 5 feet by March. We where still ice fishing the first week of April. But once the sun is up and it warms up the ice goes quick.

Was out with the kids today and got a couple pike, not hitting aggressive yet just following out of instinct. There where alot of small pike coming to shore and then this monster drifts on by. You should have seen the kids, they shouted "Dad did you see that, did you see that". Yes I was standing right beside you. Makes it worth it just to see the excitement.

Thanks arcticfishin,

I heard those guys bite really well just after ice-out and then again when the vegatation starts of die and they lose their cover in the fall.

Are you using wire leaders? Are you flyfishing for them? Now, that would be cool with a saltwater #9 outfit and a few decievers and clousers!

Did you hear that some nitwit, put a muskie skeleton together that ended up being 19 feet long!? Sheeeh!

[Smile] Work has been hectic so I haven't been on the computer, but about a week ago I got out on the water at 7 pm and got home around 2 in the morning. Hooked 20 lakers brought 2 home. They where in the 2 - 5 lb range, nothing big but lots of fun. This passed monday got some well deserved time of and took the family fishing. I don't even get my rod in the water and the wife is fighting a 20 pound northern after pics and weighing I'm just about to cast and the kids are fighting a double header 8&10 pounders. So I waited and after they tired I got to catch a few myself. Needless to say it was a fun day had by all.

We have a Squadron fishing derby coming up next monday, I took first and third place last year with a 28 lb and 12 lb northern. Question how do I post pics?

Here is another attempt at some pics. Northerns, we are trying to set a time to go to the east arm of great slave lake for some fantastic trout action. Also trying to get to great bear lake in August for a overnight trout bonanza.

Enjoy
