Mantua 02/01
#1
Fished Mantua with my pops and my mom got late start didnt hit the hard deck till around 11:00 started in the usual places about 35 to 40 feet from the boat ramp. Nothing not even a bite .. so we moved more toward the center of the lake...Same no takers. Made one last move toward the east side of the lake got a few real good bites but no hook ups. [frown][frown][frown] Looks like the majority of people were towards the back of the lake wonder if they had any luck out there ???

Didnt see others near us catching anything most everbody was leaving empty handed. The wind picked up around 3 so we decied to bail and get and eary start for the game.

Ice is still around 8 to 10 inces edges are pretty solid too
beatiful day sun kept us nice and toasty.

I fished the East side on Sat. with a neighbor kid and had non-stop bites from 10 until about 1 then it slowed down. In all we iced about 42 gills, perch and trout but we had a hard time hooking up. We probably missed 80-100 each easily. Some of them were pretty good sized this year.

Only fished there once myself, and I've never specifically sought for gills. Mind sharing what your rig was, please?

PM me if you prefer. THANKS

[cool]Yep, that sounds like ice fishing at that Mantua I know...

I stay away from that lake until about June...

Does the gills and perch pick up in the summer? I'm thinking that since I live so close it would be a good stop to take the childeren for fast action.

We were just using ratfinkies tipped with a wax worm (three different rods and three different colors) and a wire bobber (on the tip of your pole). The water was about 11' deep and the fish were between the bottom and about 4' up. The bigger ones seemed to be stacked above the others by about 2'. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

I have only started fishing around to ramp area a couple time and always had to move a lot and never caught more than a couple fish. On the east side I don't think I have ever drill more than a couple holes and have always done well. You can drive around the south side and park so you don't have to walk so far. I usually try to get away from the crowd because a person just walking by can shut of the fishing for a few minutes.

[cool]Yes, the fishing is WAY better there in the summer and early fall, but you have to get in BETWEEN the weed beds where there's holes inbetween. If you are on top of a big weedbed you usually don't do very well, only for dink perch. If you find a hole in between the beds that is at least 9 or 10 feet deep, you generally do VERY well and usually don't have to move much else the rest of the day. Perch up to 11 inches and medium size to bigger gils can be caught in those areas. Oh yeah, largies too. One broke my ultralite rod last summer when I hooked him and he dove down into the weeds. Tried to horse him out (stupid me...) and snapped the rod...

Hope that helps you out for this summer...
