Jan and Feb Fly Fishing
#1
So I know it's the season to drill holes and fish in them, and I'm a pretty dedicated ice fisherman too, but today I made it out for my second fly fishing trip of the year. Both trips have been really productive. I've been going on the Henry's Fork upstream from Ashton. Today I didn't get any really big ones 16 and fat was the biggest, but I lost a big one. Most fish have been coming on a leach pattern, or small bead head nymphs. Today there was a pretty good hatch of midges so that made it even more interesting.

I need to try that more. I usually don't start thinking about fly fishing until the 1st of April. I know those who fish the rivers in the winter seem to do well.

I went out and fished the South Fork of the Snake today and slayed the whitefish Smile Lost one nice brown after he ran me out for a while. Then we switched over to ice fishing and caught a load of trout. Winter is one of my favorite times to flyfish, next to fall.

flyfishingfool,

Did you ice fish on the south fork or move to a reservoir? I have seen people ice fishing on the south fork, but never had the guts to ice fish on moving water. Where on the river do you ice fish? Thanks for the info.

Ya we were ice fishing on the river. We went back into one of the small side channels that was frozen over but still connected to the river, so the fish were swimming in and out. I am sure there are a few of them but we only went to this one spot for a couple of hours. I have only been up the river road twice, so I couldn't tell you where it is. Sorry. I do know that the kid that showed it to me wanted it to be kept a secret though because one of his friends showed it to him. With that said, I am sure you could find a few frozen spots in other side channels. The funniest part is that the water below us was only 3.5 to 5 ft deep. Between all of us we caught between 25-30. Most were between 10"-12". Nothing huge, but good solid action and a lot of fun. We caught pretty much everything- Cutts, Bows, Hybrids, and a few browns. With the way the ice was looking, my guess is that it will probably be gone within the next couple of weeks. The ice was still plenty thick though, a good 7" i would say. I am going to try and fish the ice over by Lorenzo and see if I can do any good there. Ice fishing and fly fishing within twenty feet of the same spot is an aweome thing to do. I hope that can help a little bit. Oh and I was just using a little needlefish spoon tipped with a meal worm. seemed to work really well.

This is just the beginning of one of my favorite times of the year to fly fish. As it warms up the fishing just gets better, untill the high water comes, then I don't do so well. The catch rates are really good now if you can find them. I've been finding them in slower water, or when the midges are hatching, they show themselves to you and it is more fun. I think the important thing is to go on a day when it is relatively warm, like at least thirty degrees or so.
