It is all up to the weather gods they know what is best, for they control the fish gods.
It would be nice to have a couple lakes with open water though like willard or utah lake. Lake Powell is just too far away to drive when the fever hits you like a freight train. We can only hope that it will come off soon enough at lower elevations.

In 100* temps you can go swimming, and I can keep the power away by trying to hook them it works great...

Two years ago I caught my first open water wipers on February 20th. I love to ice fish but I would much rather be casting jigs on willard in the sunshine than digging holes this weekend. I'm with ya Bassrods.

Drill holes and cast out to them from shore. Thats what I've been doing to get by. That and casting in the backyard for practice. Havent caught anything but I did manage to piss off the dogfish the thought my jig looked like something to play with.

Yeah, I'm not looking forward to all the power squadrons (kids out on 'Daddy's Boat'). And the 90+ degree temps are not for me.
I'd be happy if there was ice all year around. Ice Fishing= the great equalizer.

I'm with you Cliff. I think the ice will be gone from Utah Lake by at least the 15th of March. Willard should be about the same if not a few days earlier depending on the winds.
I was fishing Yuba around the middle of March last year,, but cannot find the specific date the ice went off. I remember that the East side of the narrows up to Painted Rocks was still iced in, but the area around Oasis was open, so I launched. The wind came out of the East and we were trapped in the ice for a while until I found an opening in the flow. I had a 24' Whaler w/twin 150's at the time and that big boat and all that power got me out of trouble.
I've got a much smaller boat now, 22' CC with a single 150 so I'll be a little more cautious.
The trouble with hitting Utah Lake too soon after ice off is that the water is really too cold for the fish to get active and for the bite to get on. By the time it reaches 39-42 degrees I'm burned out from all that early cold water fishing and little catching. I know I'm jerkin' off, but I'll still be down there because it has been a long, long time since I've been on the water.
With all that being said, I know what you are feeling. All of those eskimos that want to ice fish all year and hate the radiating sun pouring down on their faces...All I can say is that there is plenty of what you like on the antarctic.

Last year TD was on his tube and I had my boat on Utah lake, most of the main lake had ice on still I got a few white bass and two large mouth bass....It was a great day...
And I went to East canyon the boat ramp was open out to about 100 yards out and the first arm to the east was open....
I worked along the bank and up in the arm, I got one sm bass and then could see that a south wind had came up, when I looked back to see where I came past the ice at the corner all I could see was ice....
I had to brake some ice to get past to the boat ramp, by the time I got my truck down and my boat loaded the ice was pushing up the ramp....But just to fish for 20 min on open water was great...

After a day couple days like today maybe sooner than we all think[fishon]
I know its nasty but why dont you fish the open water on the Jordan river for a few hours? Its cured my cabin fever a few times this year. I also got to see a V wave on the surface thats all you need. I know I will try some more. Its too easy to go.
