Finally- Hot day on the Web. 2/24/09

Got to my honey holes below Echo about noon and finally the ice was gone and could fish my spots. Could have posted on the fly fishing forum but I also used a spinning rod and reel and a small plastic nymph so it wasn't just flies. Caught about half on my combo cased caddis and prince. Caught a dozen or more trout and 2 whities. About 6-7 of the trout were over 18 in., the largest was a hog 25 in. rainbow with a 14.5 in. girth which calculates at about 6.5 # right? Caught her on the caddis and fly rod which made it even more of a fun challenge. If I was Oregon/Washington I would have sworn it was a salmon. That was about the fattest big fish I've ever caught. Next biggest was a 23 in. brown with a 11.5 in. girth. which obviously was no slouch. As usual, didn't have my camera with me. Kept the whities and the smallest big un for some really great fillets. Obviously, I released all the others. Probably should have released the pictured rainbow and kept a smaller but just couldn't resist the fillets she would provide us. Yum, Yum. Had a dickens of a time trying to keep Sparky from trying to help me land the big uns. Had another one break my 8# leader with it's initial hit so don't know how big that one was. I've gone to 8# leaders and 7# droppers because of the big fish that kept breaking me off last year.

Great report, I'll admit I'm a bit jealous. I wish there were streams up here in Cache that produced that many large fish. When I hit the Logan last week all I got were 10-12" browns. Oh well, the search for new streams continues.

The Logan holds some hogs of her own. Trust me!!! Yes, you are more likely to catch the "planter" sized bows, but there are a few in there that will wack your pole out of your hands. I remember a few years back (maybe 6) when they were repairing the dam at 1st dam, I caught two about the same size as posted above, back to back casts at that. Patience is the key, plus catching a bunch of small ones isnt that bad of a day anyway, than when the monster hits it just makes the day that much better!!!

I've caught some in the 16-18" range, but they're not too common. I've heard of bigger ones, I even read somewhere of truly monstrous browns over 30lbs down in the depths of 1st dam, I just haven't gotten into them myself. Don't get me wrong though, I love the Logan. It has amazing scenery and quite a few fish too. I love fishing the pocket water for cutts up above redbanks in the summer and fall. I just wish there was a stream in Cache with consistently large fish like the Weber or Provo.

The one in the pic,? Danged if I know. [:/] Hope it wasn't since there are too few. Didn't think about it until too late. [frown] Can you tell? I do know that the Hog I released wasn't. From memory, non of the others were either. This is the only one that had so much red in the gill area.

Just looked at a bunch of Google images and damn, sure looks like a cutbow. I'll be more observant and selective from now on. I am right in assuming that they aren't that plentiful and best to release, right?

And as far as the 30lb rumors on the Logan River, go into
Al's Sporting Goods and look at the monster brown on the wall. It was my cousin that got that fish (around 1991).

There is an interesting story about it, but thats a whole new topic in itself.

Most of those other browns in there came out of Logan River.

I've decided that this year I'm really going to target larger fish, even if it means fewer fish. I'm going to have to do some hunting for those big browns. I'm not expecting anything close to 30lbs, but I'll be happy if I can pull some out that are over 20".
