Motor mount trolling motor question?
#1
Has anyone had expierience with motor mount trolling motors?
Is 44 foot pounds enough to troll in a 18' bowrider?
Does the motor affect the preformance of the bigger motor?
Any insight would be appreiciated[Smile]

Do you mean transom mount? Are you trying to actually troll with this motor or just move around and/or hold position? If you're trolling you probably won't be very happy with an electric, you would be better off finding a good used gas kicker.

I've never had one myself, but I've been on a 21' boat that did. The electric motor affected the bigger motor very little because it was almost out completely of the water before the boat was on plane.

The only nice thing about it was it was always deployed. If you have a boat that's 90% ski, 10% fish then it might not be bad.

The main thing I didn't like about it was that it was completely useless in reverse, unless you were wanting to wash the transom. I also didn't like that someone always had to be at the steering wheel.

I don't know what size the one I had experience with was, but 44lbs seams a bit weak. You'd probably only get about 2 mph. In wind you might barely hit 1mph. This would be ok for popgear/worm, but not enough for cranks.

For a tiny bit more money you can get a 70lb bowmount with autopilot. This would give you 3.5mph max and 3mph in the wind. It's much more versatile and the autopilot makes trolling much more enjoyable. Add a copilot and you'll wonder why they even still make foot controls.

Just use a removable mount and the motor will be out of the way when you don't want it.

Thank you, I suspected those would be the problems, but never had any experience with one.
