Starvation
#1
Went up to Starvation today. Air = 36, Water = 38 at 7:30am. Decided to devote the day to working for a wallie. Ran to the upper end of the lake and got ready to start fishing only one problem. My bow mount troller which is new, only the 4th time out for the whole boat, will only run in warp drive. I tried everything I could think of to no avail. I have a MinnKota Power Drive. I recently added a remote to it so I thought maybe that was the problem and tried unplugging it and connecting the foot pedal. Still no joy. I tried disconnecting power several times for varying lengths of time, the last time a few hours and still the same thing. Doesn't matter if it's the foot pedal or the remote. With the remote it will chirp like it should when you hit the - or = buttons for speed but there is no change. Just running flat out. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate any help. Kinda made the fishing today pretty tough. Couldn't really run the bottom bouncers the way I wanted.

Finally found some fish on sonar just outside Rabbit Gulch on the sounth point. Looked like bunches of perch and possibly some bottom hugging wallies in 35 to 30 foot of water. Couldn't get a nibble from any of them. Things are pretty bad when you can jig up and down through a solid mass of perch and not even snag one... I did hit one walleye but only had him on for one good head shake. There was no doubt what it was when I realed in and saw the tooth damage to my crawler. Talked to 4 other boats at the ramp and only one said they caught 2 browns... Everyone complained how tough it was for the bite today. The weather was really nice though...

Thanks, Todd,,,,,,

9 times out of 10 it's in the pedal. Minn Kotas are famous (or infamous ) for foot pedal problems.
I had one go out on my Maximum 74 and one on my Terrova. I now carry a spare pedal in my 5th wheel for the Terrova plus i have a spare Maximum 74 with me also.
They never quit close to home [mad]
If it makes you feel any better I've had problems with Motor Guides too.
I don't think any of them are all that reliable.
Sucks to drive all that way and not be able to fish the way you want to.
If you have the slide speed control it's pobabley the reostat.

Thanks for the advice Crankem but I tried this with the foot pedal plugged in and without it using the remote. Same thing wth both. Also tried it again when I got home and it had been plenty long enough for it to warm up at 70 deg. Tried disconnecting power for varying lenghts of time up to a couple hours, made no difference. for it to warm up at 70 deg. difference. I could slide the speed lever back and forth with no effect. It was stuck on hi speed. When using the remote it would beep like it was getting the signal but the propeller speed would not slow down.

Thanks for any help, Todd,...

Talked to tech support at MinnKota today and they said this is a problem in the motor. Not the foot pedal or the remote. Only one authorised service center in Utah. Waiting for a call back from the guy. Seems like maybe this is a prt time gig for him as the recorded message says they only return calls after 5PM. Hopefully I can get it fixed or replaced before the weather warms back up...

If its a 24 volt set up, you could try unhooking one battery. It will run on 12 volt, and the lower voltage might kick it into a slower speed. Then hook it up 24 and see if it goes through the different speeds.

Unless this is a new service center, other than the one in Centerville, you are out of luck. I would just pack it up and send it back to Minn Kota. I have had several motors that I have had "repaired" locally and now I just send them to the Factory. They do a better job, faster, and I have yet had any "redo's". I figure the xtra shipping is cheaper than having my motor down for 6-8 weeks from a local. Send it to the Factory !!!!
