STELLWAGEN BANK & BOSTON HARBOR, MA- Cod & Bass Fishing June 7

Three of B-Fast Vessels fished the bank on Saturday. Once again—hard to believe for June—another easterly is moving through New England causing cancellations for Sunday.

John Vinusco and friends from Belleville,NJ and Lenny Zemeckis and friends from Edison, NJ had good fishing for cod and haddock in the deep-water to the east of Stellwagen Bank. Clam and squid bait was most productive. Cod between 8 and 15 pounds with almost as many keeper haddock mixed in to round out the catch.

In Boston, the fly and light-tackle striper fishing was good early in Quincy Bay. Good numbers of schoolie and small keeper bass to 32 inches were feeding on silversides on the morning outgoing tide. Chartreuse Half & Half’s on the long rod and 4 inch Fin-S rubber baits worked well on the light-spinning gear for the father and son team, Richard and Oliver Hurd, from Lexington, MA.

In Boston’s outer harbor and on the South Shore, schools of mackerel can be found with big bass coursing through the bait-fishb. The highlight of the Hurd’s morning striper charter occurred off Minot’s ledge. 13 year-old Oliver, who had upstaged his dad all morning in Boston, hooked into a monster.

In about 10 feet of water on one of the near-shore ledges—water temps are much warmer near shore—the big bass hit and immediately dumped half the line on the reel. We gave chase with the boat, and after a few more short runs, Oliver brought the trophy to net. However, it just wouldn’t fit into the net. Using the Boga-grip instead, the fish came over the rails-- bottoming out the 30 pound scale on the Boga.

Oliver’s light-tackle trophy taped at 49 inches and tipped the scales at just over 40 pounds. This bass was very deep in the girth, covered with sea lice and released unharmed. Oliver definitely put the “hurd” on that one!
