Blue pond water

My son son catches alot of bluegill out of the pond at our apartment and he always wants to eat some. The water is really blue and I wanted to know if it was still safe to eat the fish out of the water?

Not really sure about that one? I do know that the water turns blue from a chemical they put in it to help reduce the weed growth. Hopefully someone can help ya here.

Yea thats what i was thinking to. I think they put a chemical in it to help with algae or whatever. It's no big deal i'll just keep telling him that the waters not right and I aint eating anything out of it..lol

They also put dye into ponds to make it look better, especially on an apartment ground

This may be a way to do this for him. If he's really young and just excited about eating some fish that "he" caught, Go to the market and buy some filets and put them in the fridge. Next time he catches some teach him how to clean fish and dispose of the remains etc, then tell him you have to put the fish in the fridge and let them chill a bit.

You see where this is going eh? Now take out the filets and show him how to bread then and prepare them for cooking and then enjoy. I know it's kind of decieving but this way he gets to learn a little more about fishing and how to prepare them for cooking.

If he is a teenager or just a bit younger and knows all about these things just tell him the truth that you don't believe the pond water is right for eating those fish and then some weekend take him on a nice fishing trip to a lake or river that DOES have quality water for fish that can be eaten and hopefully he catches some to bring home!

I wouldn't eat them for safety's sake. That blue solution is a chemical to keep the string algae from forming. It is not safe to eat fish that absorb the chemical.[pirate]

Talk to the apartment management and maintenance and ask if they're treating the water with anything. If so, find out what it is and all your state fish and game department and ask if the fish are safe to eat.

You can also call your county agricultural extension office and local fish hatchery (if there is one), and ask if they can test the water. If they can then send or carry a sample to them for testing and ask if the fish are safe to eat.

I feel his pain, because Bluegills are some darn good tasting fish! But, I would not chance it.
