Salmon Falls Res.
#1
Hey Guys, I go to Salmon Falls Resevoir every Memorial day weekend with my Mom and Dad, My wife and kids, and Brothers and Sisters. Kind of a family reunion every year. We always do really good on the trout fishing and I have caught a couple of decent smallies but never any big numbers. Who can help me out with finding out the secrets to the smallmouth and walleye fishing. We have caught a few walleye but nothing great. Where do you start? I have always heard Greys landing is a great walleye spot and we have trolled Crankbaits and worm harnesses but have never really got into them. I love to bass fish and would love to find where more of the smallmouths are haning out as well. If you have some info and don't mind sharing, please enlighten me. Thanks

Last year we caught a lot of walleye at Salmon Falls. Some were caught on crank baits trolled real slow, but most were caught bottom bouncing with a worm harness. You have to go real slow, less than 1.5 MPH in about 15 to 20 feet of water. A real good electric motor helps keep the speed down. Look for rocky shorelines and troll about 15 feet away from the bank. When you catch one troll a little more then turn and go back over the same area. I have caught as many as 12 in the same area. Some say when you catch one stop and throw a jig with a curley tail. Chartruese works well. Slowly reteive the jig along the bottom. Hope this helps, works for me.

[ul][li]Thanks for the tips. I was starting to think I was the only one who ever fishes the lake. Do you do the best in the southern part of the lake?(Grays Landing/Norton/Gravel Pit?)[/li][/ul]

I have done OK in Big Sandy but I am limited with the trolling motor on going much more than one bay, it would be nie to go further south. Like I posted I did try the Backwaters (gravel pit) and it was low still (come on runoff) but the temp was in the 60's

The best I've ever done was in Norton Bay. I landed 15 walleye one day last summer. It was before the drawdown and in 15 feet of water. I have caught quite a few in Big Sandy and about every where you go in the lake. The big ones have not bitten. 18.5 is the biggest I have landed. I did see a dead one that would have been a good 7-8 lbs. I had a student in class this last semester that works for the F&G and was working on a gill net study in Salmon Falls. They captured two that were 35 in. So there is a new state record in the waters of Big Sandy.

We were out today (Wed) and did not do to well. Two walleye, two bass, one trout.

One bass and one walleye came from a Perch rapala trailed behind the boat.

Good luck

Thanks for the tips Sounds like things have been pretty slow. Well hopefully things will pick up for this weekend. At least you caught a couple of walleye. Better than nothing. I will be pulling into camp tomorrow around 3pm so lets hope I can figure them out in four days of fishing. Thanks
