Utah Lake reports
#1
Hit Lincoln Beach on Friday 5/15 - Launched in the fat cat at about 7:30 AM next to the N dike and headed North around the bend. Was dragging sucker cut bait and casting tandem jigs. White bass were plentiful around the dike and in the adjacent reeds. Not much size to them, but big enough to fillet. I kept a few for bait. They seemed to be in 2-5' of water.

Got snagged with the cut bait rod and had to retie. I threw my black curly jig tipped with white bass about 12" from a bobber and let it sit next to the reeds while i retied. Heard my bobber plunk down a few times and looked up to see my line buzzing out to deeper water. Felt heavy, I was using an ultra light w/ 4 lb test, I was afraid I was goin to run out of line. But I kicked and followed the fish, finally wore her down. 8lb Channel. Good fun. Fished with a bobber and cut bait around the reeds for another hour or two, movin around, nadda. Decided to kick over around the dikes, and south to the reeds. No bites dragging cutbait. Fished the reeds for an hour or two, nadda. Went home.

On Sunday, 5/17, My brother and I hit lincoln beach at about 5:00PM. We fished East from the parkin area along the reeds, towards what i believe is benjamin slough?. There was a boat up tight in the reeds catching small white bass i presume. Both of us dragged cutbait and fished all around lincoln beach until about 1:00AM. Caught 1 mudder on a spinner and my brother caught 1 small channel cat. (Maybe 2 lbs).

There were people fishing off of the dike the entire time practically. Before it got dark there were hordes of people catching hordes of small white bass. After dark, most of them left, but a group of 5-6 stayed until we left at 1:00AM when we all left. They caught a few small channels and that was it.

I've been registered on these forums before, but always seem to be more behind the scenes since I spend most of my time in Laramie, Wy. I grew up in Evanston and used to fish Echo, Mantua, Pineview, ect. Used to catch grundles of Crappie out of Echo, never see anyone post about catching them anymore though. There is or was some decent catfishing there too. Anyhow though, I am kind of surprised that I did not to do better on the cats at Utah Lake these past two trips. But I really wanna get into some so I'm heading back either tomorrow or the next day. I'll post a pic of the places I fished, it was generally from 2-10' but usually tried to stay in about 5'.

Would I be better off trying the west side? The knolls? Pelican?

The Red on this map is the area I fished. Was I too close to LB? Should I go out around towards the Springs next time? Sorry for the long post and all the questions, but I'd appreciate any feedback / suggestions. Thanks

That's the area I usually fish when I'm down there. The thing I have been told and then learned is the cats will like to hold a certain depth at different times. I kind of move shallow to deep moving along until I find the right depth for the day. They might like right against the weeds they may be out at 7ft. You just have to keep working until you find them.

Well I'm heading out tomorrow morning at about 4:00 AM. My brother and I will hopefully launch from the knolls at sunup and catch some whities for bait since I'm out of sucker.

I appreciate the suggestions / comments - Will let you all know how we do when I get back tomorrow.
