Went out on my lake (Stansbury Park) this evening and was messing around with a 4" soft jerkbait targeting LMB. I landed 2 but hooked into 6. I lost the 4 about 10 feet from shore and one I landed was barely hooked. I am pretty inexperienced with jerkbaits and would like to hear your feedback. I could clearly feel the bites and felt like I was getting a good hookset. The hook was new and sharp. What am I doing wrong and how different is this bait fished from "traditional" LMB baits? Thanks in advance...

Whenever you can get away with a straight shank hook it's always better but with swimbaits or jerkbaits an ewg (extra wide gap) hook is almost a necessity. A 3/0 Gamakatsu EWG hook is a pretty good size for most jerkbaits. The wide gap allows the bait to be pushed down into the belly of the hook exposing more hook to dig in the fishes mouth.
Some jerkbaits have a slot in the middle of the bait that minimizes the amount of plastic that has to be pushed down when setting the hook. If yours do not have that slit get rid of them and go get some that do.
Oh, and set the hook like your trying to rip it's mouth off[laugh]

If the jerkbait dosen't have a slit you can cut it with a razor or small sissors. I cut mine deeper when I get them. and the big hook should help. later chuck

Mine has the slit but I am using a 2/0 hook. I will try the bigger hook, thanks.

If you can get away with it, nose hook the bait instead of texposed. Another option is the Mustad BLN91768 with the screwlock. Its a 60 degree bend instead of a 90 like the EWG hook. You can use the weighted or non-weighted version. A lot of guys use these for frogs, also pretty commonly used for paddle tail tube swimbaits. I believe most tackle shops carry them now days.
If your texposing these baits your going to loose a few fish, just the nature of the beast. Sometimes scent will make them take it a little deeper. You really have to pause on the hookset, givem a split second to choke it down, sort of like a topwater bite. Wait for the rod to load up and like Fun4 said lay the wood to them.

I wanted to thank all of you for the advice. I went out today and tried the new methods and my brother and I slayed them. We caught around 20 fish in about 1.5 hours. Some pigs and a bunch of "cookie cutters". We kept a few cookies and the pics are below. Thanks again for the suggestions. Every fish was hooked well.
Later,
Chris

If you are fishing Stands and keeping the fish they will kick you out and may get you for trespassing...
They don't care if you fish just don't keep them...

Sorry buddy, but you are dead wrong.
1- You DO have to be a resident to fish here. We DO care if you fish it and you are not a resident.
2- You CAN keep fish if you want. It's suggested that you release them, but no written regulation is in effect.
I have lived here for 5 years, and the cops are finally starting to bust illegal fishers out here. I saw two guys get booted just the other day.
I know you are all for C&R Cliff, but you have no idea about fishing out here.

I live in Stansbury so it is not trespassing for me. The Stansbury website has written you can keep some here is the link...

This lake needs some fish to be harvested, in my opinion. I rarely take any and when I do it is very few in comparison to the amount I catch.

I'd say I disagree the the lake needs fish to be harvested. The ecosystem is pretty dang good right now, with maybe even a lack of fish compared to other fisheries. Harvest bluegill and grass carp all you want. leave the bass.
That's just my opinion though...

Times have changed 10 to 15 years ago they did run people out for fishing that kepted the fish....But as small as it is if the fish are kepted it will get fish out or down till you may only get three or four fish on a good day...

wow. You should have just kepted to yourself on this one. 10 to 15 years ago it was the exact same regs. The only thing they would run you off for is not being a resident. So if you bought a house and kepted up with your mortgage, you could kepted fishing here.

Stansbury can't make those rules. We asked Chris Penne of the DWR at one of the community fishing programs about the lake and could the public use it. His answer was yes it is open to the public and anyone that gets kicked off the lake should contact him.

He's probably talking about the mill pond which is right next to Stansbury Lake. Two different bodies of water. One is private, one is not. I know for a fact that the DWR does nothing to manage Stansbury Lake.

I will admit I have never fished there and have no plans of fishing there. The only reason I even asked the question was because when the lake opened they asked for volunteers to help the DWR out. Then a year later it drops out of the Community Fishing guide and I started hearing that people were getting kicked off the lake. Was just curious plain and simple. By the reaction I got from the question I'm sure there is nothing simple about it. I have my ideas but I will keep them to myself as they are just guesses. That said the DWR is interested if you get kicked off the lake.
