hey all,
so recently i started to like fishing (after coming home from a picnic). and so now, i would like to buy my own rod and reel. Could you guys please give me some suggestions. I really don't know what I'll be fishing, but i'm guessing something along the lines of small bass, sunfish, carpies, trout, etc.
And also, where are some small fishing lakes/ponds/areas around the pittsburgh area?
PS. any fishing advice would be greatly appreciated

Hey Aznavalanche welcome to BFT and the wonderful world of fishing! We are glad to have you. If you would like to get yourself a really good rod that will be good for everything you listed i would say get and Uglystick rod and real combo in med/heavy action. Your can get one under $50. I have one of their rods and i got everything from little sun fish to big 40" northern pike on it. I know you have a Dicks sporting goods around you somewhere. Just go there and tell them that you are looking for and uglystick spinning rod combo.
I used to live In Moon township for a while and when i lived there i would drive out to a place called Raccoon Creek State Park. Its a small lake the has a little of everything in it. They even stock trout in it to. I think that would be a good place for you to get away for a while.
Here is the link for the park http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateParks/parks/raccooncreek.aspx
Remember to keep us posted on what rod and real you get and if you have any luck catching anything.

if you live close to lock 3 bait and tackle go acroos the road below the dam lock use a 1/2 oz slip sinker a 2/0 hook and a 5-8inch bait fish (chub, sucker, shiner, ect)cast it into the tailwater and be ready for a fight.we go there fishing sometimes but we live 60 miles away so we dont fish it to much.if i lived closer we would fish it a lot.you can catch BIG channelcatfish, bass, freshwater drum, walleye, pike plus many other types of fish.
good luck

umm...well seeing that i'm a beginner at fishing, i might want to start off a little smaller. But do you know of anywhere else? I'll be sure to go there eventually, and maybe every once and a while if I don't want to travel for a long time...But anywhere else you know of? Thanks in advance

hey, so I might go up to Raccoon Creek State Park sometime this weekend. A couple a questions:
1. Is there a bait/tackle store there? or somewhere that sells live bait (just in case none of my lures don't work...which i highly doubt haha).
2. Where is the best area to fish there now for bass...i would guess any where the stream meets the lake?

I always do good with a neon green and even a white spinner bait. kinda looks like a Jig with a metal spoon on the top. I got tired of waiting for the fish to bite on the bait so decide to grab my artifical and hit a couple bass on it the other day.

there is a bait store there, im not sure where but i remember stopping there for something to drink once. I cant tell you where to fish there for bass cause its bee almost 10 years since i fished it. Its a small lake so you should be able to cover alot of water with ease.
