Henry's Lake Report 6/13/09
#1
I went to Henry's Lake again yesterday. It was the second time I've been this year. Last time I went I caught my first fish there! (Although I only caught one!)

Yesterday I first hit the County Boat dock. The last time I went there were TONS of fish there and you could literally see them swimming around the docks. Yesterday they were GONE. I did end up fishing there hoping maybe a few were still lingering that I couldn't see. (I am landlocked so no boat for me.) Before the day was done I did end up catching 7 hybrids that were all about 6 inches. I didn't think there were small fish in that lake!?!? I caught them all on a holographic panther martin. After all of that a storm came through and I took a break for a little while.

After the storm, I moved over to by Wild Rose. I found some nice places to fish from the bank over by there that seem pretty deep. After trying nightcrawlers for a while I switched back to my panther martin. On my second cast with that I had a huge hit and after a long fight I landed a 23 inch, 5 pound hybrid!!! She fought hard and long and I'm glad a landed her! Pictures of it are attached.

Overall it was a pretty good day on the lake. There were a ton of boats out there when I got there. After talking to a lot of people, most said that the fishing was really slow. I really didn't see that many fly fisherman, and most of who I talked to said fishing was terrible for fly fishing. I did end up seeing a really BIG brook trout brought in by a boater coming in. My guess is it was 24 or so inches and 5 pounds. It was amazing and really mean looking.

I look forward to my next trip. Maybe I can get some guys off of here to join me? It isn't as interesting going alone!

Well, enjoy the pictures!

WOW those pictures are HUGE. I have high speed and it took me a while to load them.
We were told here that the boat docks were off limits to fishing. Are they still? Ron

Hey, sorry about the size of the pics. I have a Mac and don't know how to resize them on here. The boat docks at county boat dock are closed to fishing although I fished around the area before the boat docks and just cast out there. I wish I had the panther martin I used yesterday a couple of weeks ago! I would have caught a ton!!

Nice fish! My buddies just got back from there and said it was indeed a little slow. They did manage to catch some nice fish. They are heading back in a few weeks hoping it will be be better. Seems everything is running a few weeks later than normal.
I had the same problem with my MAC and pic size. Here is what I found. Double click on the pic in iphoto, then share/email. After it loads, click on the pic and then hold down ctrl and click and select save. Rename and save as the small version and remember to keep it as jpg file. Now use this new file for attachment.
Enjoy that dinner!! Rod

Great report and nice fish. Last year I started catching those small hybrids about this time of year. That hybrid will be much better eating then any spawning cutt.

I'm surprised you didn't try the cliffs. Most bait fishermen do well dunking a worm and marshmellow in that area.

[fishin]Does anyone have any tips on targeting the hybrids? I've found them just fine in the past but this is the first time that i have fished henry's in the spring. I've been getting a lot of cutts and brookies in the 1-3 pound range mostly on panther martins and other spinners but i am looking for those big hybrids. I was thinking about trying the cliffs althogh i usually have better luck on the other side of the lake. What do you all think???

I may be wrong, but I think we are just about to the damsel hatch. I would start using damsels out in the hybrid holes. Check out Bill Schiess' book Fishing Henry's Lake for a general map of the hybrid holes.
