I predict ... Wednesday @ Willard
#1
[#002850]I predict that this coming Wednesday (June 24th) will be one [#bf0000]stellar[/#bf0000] day for wiper fishing at Willard. Why? ....
[#002850]
[#800000]-- Because the moon will be far from full
-- The barometric pressure has been low for such a LONG time.
-- The barometric pressure will have been higher for two previous days and still on the rise.
-- The wipers are still hungry from waiting for shad to grow big enough to fill their hunger.[/#800000][/#002850][/#002850]
[#002850][#002850][#800000]-- And the water temps will consistently start to hit the 70's.[/#800000]

Man, talk about the stars and planets lining up ... could be VERY exciting out there on about Wednesday.

I won't be out there ... only because I will be dead-sticking for monster macks on the Gorge with Rileyfish, N.E.T.O. and Capt. Jim Williams. But, man, if I weren't, you know I would be out there on Willard with my 2-pole license enjoying the scream and zing of my level-wind reels.

So get your kitchen passes and schedule your sick leave ... go out and prove my prediction wrong.

It's FUNNY that you wrote this post, cuz I was just telling my GF that with the weather I saw on weather.gov<---(good site for weather) that either Tues or Wed was gunna be STELLAR for fishing somewhere and that I wanted to go to Willard & try for wipers...and wallys OF COURSE...now I may just HAVE TO! If an Old Coot predicts something that close to what this old coot does...maybe...just maybe...it's going to be GREAT FISHING!
The worst part is I just got a new downrigger for my 50th birthday Sun. and was "thinking" of going to like Rockport to try it out...but hmmmmmmmm....dunno now!
Dang it ....decisions, decisions....
I got the downrigger just so I'll be ready for the DAV fishing day (and cuz I been wanting one for a long time to) and wanted to be a LITTLE more edjumicated on how to use one for the Vets in my boat. DANG IT!!!! Well like all good decisions....I'm gunna sleep on it and decide later...
Good call Old Coot....you got it going .....

Thanks Old Coot, this was all the motivation I needed. I think that fish_or_die and myself will venture out for a Wednesday afternoon at Willard.
I don't quite understand the Planer board, just unfamiliar with them, but I'll do my homework and see if I can procure something.
We went to Willard for the first time last week and I think we're hooked, need to spend some more time up there just to make sure.

Don't get all tied up in trying to use planer boards out there until you have gotten aquainted with regular long-line trolling. Just run long lines (175-200 feet) out to your lures on both sides of your boat. Once you have that mastered (or at least familiar) then graduate to planers. The cluster mess of planners can sour a newbie fast. (not that you are a newbie, but for others reading this.)

-- Troll 3.0 mph
-- Use about any Rapala lure in size 5 or 7 in Rapala's "silver" color. (silver/white belly and black back)
-- Start trolling emediately right out the channel of the South marina. Keep trolling between there and the light pole. Bound to bring in some good super wiper fillets.

You could always use your downriggers at Willard. I have done this several times and it is a good method of catching wiper, even walleye when you use a lure that does not go down as deep as you would like it to go. I usually use a 3/8 oz red jig head with a white or pearl curly tail jig. Good luck no matter where you go. WH2

Our biggest fish came off our down riggers in the tourney my partner and I fished on the 13th, trolling 3.25 MPH on the GPS.

I buy a new Rapala before almost every trip and always revert back to a chartreuse curly tail or a jake's lure.
But as always, I can fit another Rapala in my box so a number 5 silver Rap will have a new home with me

Wow, I must troll way to slow. Everyone on Willard seems to fly past me. I'm usually trolling cranks about 2 mph gps max, usually 1.5 - 1.7.

I'll have to use the gas kicker to keep at 3.2, will try that speed on Wed and see how we do if I get out there that is.

Ya know, I did say size 5 or 7. But, for some odd reason, 7's seem to do better than 5's. 7's are bigger and 5's are closer to the size of the forage food so it always has me puzzled as to why 7's work better for me than 5's.

Yea, and when the water reaches 75-80 degrees, you'll want to troll at 3.5 GPS!!

[:p] I'd rather be sticking some big mac's.[:p]

But you have learned just like myself that when you have all these conditions you can have steller days on willard.

What's your perdiction on boils this year,on the thirteenth reelfast said he saw alot of shad schools out in open water, can't be long now,I know it's been cool but all he77 should break lose soon

I too seen the shad minnows the same day (give or take a day) Reelfast did. All up around the launch ramps. Was a great sight to see. You know if they are in the ramp area, there are plenty in the rocks all along the shore line.

However, often times, some early boils occur not for shad, but for wiper minnows that are planted. I think that the shad driven boils actually start later than most folks think. I think that the on-again, off-again sporadic early boils are wipers chasing baby wipers. But then I am only guessing.

If you have never casted to the shore for wipers your missing out on a good time.

So when do they plant the wipers in willard,Late June early July?

Thanks for the reply,You have fun sticking those mac's

I don't know just when the wipers are planted but I think they actually do it two or three times a season. Hense, 2-3 wiper-on-wiper boils prior to the later wiper-on-shad boils.

Again, just a combonation of hear-say and guessing on my part.

Now, Fool, what would it take to get you to teach me the fine art of wiper catching by casting along the banks? I'll PM ya some time.

Ah I see,Interesting thought. Wonder why they don't post them on the stocking report?

Any time Ralph, Be ready for some sore arms and wrists. It can get brutal casting.
