Utah Lake Cats
#1
I went to the Lincoln Beach area on Monday morning to fish for the channel cats and maybe hook into a walleye or two. No luck with the walleye, but the catfish were anxious to play. I had some fun with the white bass throwing spinner jigs as well.

There were three of us fishing. Before the wind blew us off the lake, the three of us caught 12 catfish, and 9 white bass. I caught 8 of the catfish and 7 of the white bass so I shared my fish with my two friends so we could all have some "table fare." Mack caught the largest catfish. The catfish I caught were much smaller than those I caught on our previous trip. However, they were just the size I like for eating.

We caught the catfish on white bass meat, and some old carp meat that Tube Dude had given me a long time ago.

[#0000ff]It has been a pleasant surprise to find so many of the smaller cats in Utah Lake this year. Like yourself, we prefer to keep the smaller ones for the table and release all the larger ones...unless we need some smoker fodder.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Glad the carp meat paid off for you. There are some days when it definitely outshines the other bait options. On our last trip to the Knolls we probably caught 2 to 1 on carp meat as opposed to minnows. But the bigger fish all came on whole large minnows. Ya never know.[/#0000ff]

The carp meat made a believer of me. Now I wish I had kept the carp I caught at Yuba for bait!

[cool][#0000ff]The way Yuba is going it looks like the best fishing will be for carp. But, those small to midsize carp from Yuba are SUPERB bait. They are just right to get a nice little fillet that you can cut into strips for KITTY CHOW. The big carp from Utah Lake and Willard are good for bait but when you fillet them it is like butchering a hog. I can't believe how messy and bloody those big carp are. But, the kitties like it so I do not rinse the fillets before packaging.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I am running low on carp meat. I have usually gotten in a couple of bow-shooting trips by now but between wierd weather and a messed up shoulder I have not twanged my bow yet.[/#0000ff]
