Good casting reel?
#1
Hi guys, I am new to this forum hopefully I can learn a lot here!

Anyways, I'm looking to buy a new baitcasting reel. Having trolled and bobber fished my whole life I don't have too much experience other than the occasional times I borrow my dad's casting reel.

I dont have too much money right now sense my tuition payment is coming up so im looking for a more lower to mid priced reel/combo.

While doing my own research I came up with the Daiwa Exceler. People seem to like this reel, and it has a high gear ratio which seems good since I wont catch anything too big.

What do you guys think? Thanks!

Good Choice, i have a couple Exceler's. I like them better than some of my more expensive reels that i own. They are insane smooth when they cast, and the drag is awesome. I brought in everything form small bass to 40" pike with this reel. Cant beat it for the price. I dont know if they make a rod and real combo with this real, even if they dont buy the reel and get a decent rod when you get some extra cash.

hey thanks for the input.

Yah, I was looking around and Cabela's is running a deal with the reel/rod combo for 80 bucks. Doesn't seem too bad to me, even if the rod isnt too great Ill have something to get me by.

[#005000]I bought the combo from Cabela's Abu Garcia Black max-L/Pro guide cast IK-12-3233 and I went to my local sporting store bought a Shimano casting rod. I bought another reel from Cabela's, a Cabela's Prodigy LH everyone who bought it gave it a 5 star except 1 gave a1. I believe he just didn't know how to use it! Already bought Spider wire! So now just have to wait for them to arrive! Then practice and practice every chance I get! Thanks you all for the information. God bless you all![/#005000]

Yah just took a drive up to the Cabelas in Rogers, MN this weekend to pick the Daiwa Exceler combo up.

It was a great deal seeing as the reel itself was also 80 bucks so its like getting a free rod, like pikeguy said.

Now time to practice and see if I cant pick up a northern or two!

Thanks for the help guys

Oh, and the rod doesnt seem too bad if anyone else is considering this combo. I got the 6'6'' Medium action. It was good for the price [Wink]

Nothing wrong with getting a free rod! I used to have a Diawa low profile casting reel but I never liked it. It never seemed to work quite right and I had horrible issues with backlash that I couldn't seem to keep under control no matter how I set it. The only casteing reel I have now is an Abu Garcia AmmbaSadeur that works well. I like the full size as it holds 300 yards of 20 pound braided line as opposed the the 120 or so the Diawa held. I hope you have good luck with yours.[Smile]
