what size hook?

what size hook would I use for small 2 to 3 inch shiners?

and also, if i hook them through the tail, how do i keep then from falling off, it seems like everytime i cast out, they somehow get away, or fall off.

well when i hook the shiner through the tail and then cast it out, it keeps on flying off...am I casting too hard?

Put it further up the tail or hook it through the upper lip into the lower lip.
