My old fishing buddy and I are heading out on a back packing trip to a lake in the high Uintas with 2 days of fishing planned.
What flies are the most important and what time of day seems to be the best?
We are hoping to catch a lot of fish but even if we just land a few we will be happy.
Thanks for any advice.

Where are you going? If you are fishing lakes, a black bead-head wooly bugger is hard to beat in the Uintas. Mornings and evenings are usually best, but fish can be caught all day.

We fished up there last weekend at mirror lake and alexander lake. On mirror lake the fish were caught on black wolley buggers with a gold bead at the head. On alexander lake the brook trout were not going for the wolley buggers but they were hitting a kastmaster in a rainbow color. white background with pink and blue. All fish were caught from float tubes. Hope that helps and good luck.

There are a few staple flies that I always take with me to the Uintas: Mosquito pattern, Royal Wulf, Renegade (the only fly my Dad would use growing up, lol), BH black woolybugger with a size 10 BH Hares Ear as a trailer. You'll be on fish all day long with those. Good luck!

I always do well with a elk hair caddis. I was up a few weeks ago in the middle of the day and caught 17. Also try using a beaded prince nymph dropped from any other fly.
Good , luck. I am also headed back up to trial lake area in a week for some more camping. Let us know how things went.

Red Castle, later in August should be fantastic. Take grey hackle peacock, elk hair caddis, wooley buggers in darker colors, and renegades. Hardware can produce there as well. Jakes, mepps cyclops, crocodile, super duper, and panther martin usually produce fish. The mosquitos have been in rare form this year so remember your bug spray.

I love Red Castle Lake! We used to go there for scouts when I was a teenager (quite the hike). It has some nice sized fish in it (for a Uinta lake). Try the stream that feeds it, there are lots of fish in it as well. I'm Jealous! Have fun, and be safe!
I remember sledding down a snow pack in mid July, and landing into the upper castle lake! That was cold! lol!

HARDWARE?! Shame on you[laugh]
My choices are Elk Hair (YELLOW) Haresear, Adams, ANT, small hopper, Copper Johns all colors, PT, Renagade, Prince BH, and as already mentioned, BLACK woolly or leech, but Burnt Orange is amazing.
Also PURPLE Quiggly Cripple.

Sorry about the hardware. I forgot I was on the fly board rather than the general. I'm one of those that goes both ways. [cool]
