Four Floaters on Friday
#1
[cool][#0000ff]Two tubers and two tooners had ourselves a little floatilla on Deer Creek this morning. Man, what a great difference from the trip to Jordanelle a couple of days ago. At 25 degrees the air temp was a full two degrees warmer. And, the water was a whole degree warmer too...at 57. Positively balmy.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]LloydE launched his toon at the ramp. Pkred launched his toon at the island gap, after parking outside the gate. Parrmark and myself parked in the state park area and used our tube carts to get our gear down to the water. We launched about 7:30 AM...after Jesse made his second trip back to his vehicle to retrieve forgotten items. What would a fishing trip be without that kinda stuff?[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Fairly calm, light breeze and morning mist rising off the water. Lots of green "algae peas" in the water. Pea soup fog?[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I started by throwing a spinner in shallower water as I kicked toward the island. Got the first fish jinx out of the way with a wacko perch on that spinner. Had a couple of harder hits (trout?) but no hookups. Fished jigs around the island for a while, trying to find bigger perch and/or a stray walleye. Neither one showed up to play.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Finally started dragging flies behind a bubble. Got my first and only rainbow just after I got out past the island and got near Clint (Pkred). He had caught a couple of bows by then and ended the day with a limit of 4.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I kept messin' around and changing rigs and flies. Shoulda stuck with what I knew works, but din't. Parrmark also scored a limit of slimers and Lloyd got 3, plus a porky perch. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]But, the first fish jinx was perch-involved. On my way back into shore for an equipment adjustment I passed over a spot that had some interesting looking "bogeys" near the bottom...in fairly shallow water. I noted the spot and finished going into shore to adjust the gear. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]As I kicked back out over the likely looking spot I sent down a pale perch roadrunner with some juicy worm on it. Thump. BENDO. Toad perch. Yee haww. Got a couple more bigguns and some throwbackers. Then it got quiet. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I went back out to drag flies for trout again but the thought of those perchies was messin' with my mind. I missed a couple of good hits and lost a couple more good trout on the way in. Inexperienced fish. Didn't know how to hang on.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Put up the bubble chucker rods and brought out my perch smackers. Fished a gold roadrunner with orange spots over the previous hot spot. Thump, BENDO, more good perchies. Then it quieted down again. As I left the spot to give it a rest, Parrmark moved in and proceeded to add some gold to the silver slimers in his basket. I kicked back over my small hump and finished off my limit of 10 toad perch just as the Deer Creek noon zephyr kicked up. Went from glass to popcorn in ten seconds flat. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]All four of us were smart enough to head for shore. We all made it without swamping, but I had to land quite a ways from where I had launched. Glad I had my little tube cart. Hooked it up and trudged down the shore to my vehicle. Another good test for ti.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Took the "dead fish pictures" of everybody's catch and we were all back on the way home by about 1 PM. Good day, good fishing, good fishing buddies. Good grief.[/#0000ff]

If that's his truck, I like those drawers built on the bed with the cab over.
I could use those for fishing and bowhunting as that idea is neat as you could just leave things in there for next week's outings....
I do get tire of hauling things out and in the truck each weekend bowhunting.... I don't have a cab but a bed cover.....

Well, with the kids coming over Saturday evening I found myself back up there Saturday morning giving it another go. I wanted to finish off what I had started on Friday before the wind blew me off.[fishin]

Sooo, I hit the water shortly after 7:00AM. I was meat hunting, and I made fairly quick work of securing 4 'bows plus a bonus fish that was released. This time the preferred patterns were in reverse from Friday with 4 fish taken on the MarmaLady and one on the Black/White. The thing that seemed to be making it work for me was using an orange bubble with a short 24" leader. It appeared that the bubble pulled them in for a closer look and the fly/crawler sealed the deal. I think I actually had some bumps on the bubble.

With a limit of trout, I tried to get something going with the Perch. I found them, but they weren't very interested in playing. But, after 3 hours of working them hard I scratched out a limit.

All this provided for a most excellent fish fry with the fambly Saturday night! Thanks for all of your help and ideas Pat![cool]

Yep, that's my little rig. Up until last year, I was an avid retriever dog trainer and that setup worked very well. I could have my dog crates, bird launchers and other gear on top, and stow all kinds of stuff in the drawers.

It works quite nicely for fishing too. . . .[fishin]

[cool][#0000ff]Nice work Jesse.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Hope you left a few of those porky perch for the rest of us. Good to see that there is still a decent population of them.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Glad the Marmalady treated you better. That is usually our top fly but sometimes the fickle fishies want something else. Always good to go with a variety and serve up a buffet. Let the fish tell you what they want...and then LISTEN.[/#0000ff]

Yea, there's still a bunch in there. You're Pale Perch Roadrunner was the weapon of mass destruction.[cool]

[cool][#0000ff]Yeah, that little killer was what got the most and biggest for me the other day too. Works good wherever there are perch fry on the menu. And most of the larger fish I took home last friday had been munching bitty perchettes.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Y'know, I seem to recall that I have always done better in there with perch meat rather than crawlers. Next time I go I will fix some up from my bait stash. Trout like it too.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Someday when you have the time you should plan to come visit my tackletorium. I'm sure you could pick up a few ideas to use on your own.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Gonna head south to Yuba within the next two weeks to begin my annual perch whackin' sessions down there. Reports have been iffy, so I gotta see whether the perch are goin' bye bye or if the other tanglers just ain't got it. Wanna help with the R & D?[/#0000ff]

Perch meat is what did it for me with the Toadies. The fish like the taste, and I like the durability.

No doubt I could get many great ideas. Maybe sometime next week on a long lunch? You show me your fish-o-rama and I buy you lunch?
