Everything's hitting at CJ
#1
With some great advice from Burt (Aluma165) my wife and I limited easily at CJS this afternoon. Towards the end, we were picking them up every 5 minutes.....and they are big, fat fish. When pulling out, talked to a former director of F and G, who fished for crappie after limiting out on trout, and he and his fishing buddy picked up 40 crappie, 11 1/2-12 1/2 inches. They have added a lot of weight since this summer. Bank fishermen at Black Sands were nailing big bass. The perch are also hitting. Gotta love the fall. Thanks again, Burt. Mike

Good to hear - Thanks for the report. I guess a cast and blast is in order.

[indent]Thanks for the update. What's the deal with the huge panfish this year? I don't remember ever catching larger crappie & perch - especially at CJ. Could it be one one of the unexpected benefits of global warming?

Interesting that you would ask that question, because I posed that very question to the F & G fellow, who was a fisheries biologist before becoming director, and the Reader's Digest version of an answer is that there are so many variables, known and unknown, that you can't really say without a lot of specific research. I know a lot of people have wondered why the perch couldn't be found this year compared to previous years, and yet the crappie were thick. Competition between the two species??? They still can't give a definitive answer about the record steelhead and salmon runs this year either. I think fishery biology is a lot like my field of psychology: 2/5 science and 3/5 b.s.!!! Mike

Or a weather forecaster. Isn't it amazing how often they are wrong with all the technology they have?

Went out to CJ yesterday and fished at Cottonwood and the bridge below the dam. All I got at Cottonwood was a couple of teeny bass. Then I moved to the bridge and caught a smallie about a pound and several nice trout (which I had trouble getting up over the rail because there was no one else to handle the net). Saw someone catch a trout on a perch colored Rapala that was about 20".

All and all, a good day.
