polo-dog, Chickamauga, Crappie, 10/26 and 10/27/09, Freida
#1
Freida and I hit a a spot where the crappies tend to stack up when the water cools off but they are here early this year. We went for the last few minutes of light the last two evenings and had a great time. I went Monday night just planning on catching one good crappie to eat for lunch Tuesday and ended up with 4 good keepers and fished for about an hour and a half yesterday in the rain at dusk and had 10 nice ones. We had two over 13 inches, 5 over 12 inches and 3 right at 11 inches. All fish were found on one particular spot on a deep roadbed. The top of the roadbed is about 15 feet down and it took a 1/16oz jig 24-28 seconds to get to the bottom. I moved the bait one crank on my reel and stopped until the bait hit bottom, and then repeatd until I got the cast back to the boat. The hits were all on the pause between cranks. One hit just made the slack in the line just a bit too much for hitting bottom. That made me wonder how many hits I had missed by not setting the hook with a tiny bit too much slack. 10 good keepers in an hour and change is good for me. Especially when it takes a half a minute to start my retrieve. The wind was almost dead calm which helped me stay right on the small spot that every hit came on. It was off shore a bit and must have only been an area that was about 20 feet square. I hope that the fish will stay there for me for a while as it's easy to get to and not far from the house. Sorry no pics, I filleted them for folks at work.
