When I first ice fished for burbot I fished the Firehole area because that is where they were. There were no publicly reported burbot caught past the pipeline but then I heard about some caught at buckboard...last year I saw pics of burbot from Antelope flats, this year from Linwood and now hideout!?!
It's fairly easy to target the burbot through the ice on the north end but if the Utah side does not freeze enough to ice fish I fear they will keep spreading. I am not a biologist and have only fished the Gorge a dozen or so times but I don't think we can put enough pressure on the burbot to stop them. Deep water has no effect on them, they are not territorial, they will feed on anything, it is in their nature to proliferate and by no means are they lacking of that and only maybe four? months out of the year you can expect to catch one.
I imagine when the population increases more will be caught throughout the year but as now I see no stopping them. I'm excited to go ice fishing but Sad to see another predator in the Gorge.
