Chesterfield
#1
I had a few days off this week and heard that Chesterfield had safe ice so I headed out for some early season ice fishing yesterday. When I pulled up just before sunrise my truck said it was 0 degrees outside. Burrrr.

After checking the ice in a shallow area, I was pleasantly surprised by 5.5 inches of
good clear ice. I stayed close to the shore just in case. The ice was extremely noisy, as loud as I've ever heard ice. The fishing was fairly slow early on but I was able to pick up 5 fish in the first 2 hours. I moved to a different location and the fishing picked up considerably from 10:00 to 1:30 and I iced some nice, classic Chesterfield "footballs". When I wasn't catching fish I was being entertained by the ice moans, groans, and cracks. It was a bit scary when it sounded like the ice was going to explode underneath my feet.

Only two other groups out on the ice when I left around 2:00. Good luck to anyone who gets out. Be careful, I did see a few spots of suspicious ice out near the middle of the reservoir. I apologize for my photos, I was alone and only had my phone.

Thanks for the report. That is very exciting news. To bad I won't be able to make it down there for a few weeks.

I may be heading up that way within the next couple of weeks and was just curious if you know what depth you were catching them at? I've never iced fished Chesterfield and want to give it a try.

Thank you for the report, also. Those are some cold and beautiful Rainbows. Will be there in a week or so.
